Job Purpose

To perform maintenance, diagnosis, repair and overhaul of diesel trucks and related equipment to ensure safe, efficient and reliable operation. To ensure adherence to health, safety, quality and environmental standards, minimise downtime and extend the service life of all assigned fleet.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Perform routine maintenance (oil changes, filters, belts, cooling systems, fluids, etc.) on diesel trucks.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and electronic faults using diagnostic tools and manuals.
  • Conduct major and minor repairs including engines, gearboxes, transmissions, drive-trains, brakes, suspensions, steering, clutch assemblies, exhaust systems, etc.
  • Overhaul or rebuild engines and related components when necessary.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and inspections to identify potential issues early, reduce breakdowns, ensure reliability.
  • Attend to breakdowns, both in the workshop and roadside if required.
  • Maintain and repair air systems, cooling systems, fuel injection systems, turbochargers.
  • Work with hydraulic systems where applicable (e.g. if truck has hydraulic components, lifts, etc.).
  • Perform electrical diagnostics and repair of lights, alternators, starter motors, sensors etc.
  • Keep accurate maintenance, repair, and service records, reports, job cards, parts usage.
  • Ensure tools and equipment are maintained in good working condition.
  • Adhere to safety, health and environmental regulations and company policies (including PPE, safe work procedures, etc.).
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors about defect findings, repair plans, time estimates and parts required.
  • Possibly supervise or mentor junior mechanics or apprentices when required.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly workshop environment.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Diesel Mechanic / Diesel Trade Test – Required -Not negotiable.
  • Trade Test Qualification - required
  • N3 or equivalent technical/engineering qualification preferred.
  • Valid driver's license (minerally, Code EC or Code 08/10 depending on vehicle size) — ability to drive trucks may be required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years
  • For senior roles, 5-8+ years.
  • Experience with diagnostics and fault-finding on diesel engines, hydraulics and electrical systems.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance program.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong mechanical aptitude; hands-on ability to use tools, measuring instruments, diagnostic equipment.
  • Good understanding of diesel engine theory, transmission systems, hydraulics, cooling systems, air systems.
  • Proficiency in fault diagnosis and problem solving.
  • Ability to read, understand and utilize technical manuals, wiring/hydraulic/electrical schematics.
  • Good welding, brazing or metal-working skills are advantageous depending on scope.
  • Good organizational skills; ability to plan own tasks, report status, prioritize work.
  • Attention to detail, quality workmanship.
  • Physical fitness: able to handle physically demanding tasks, work in heavy/lifting, grease, grime, sometimes in remote or rugged conditions.
  • Good teamwork and communication: able to work with fellow mechanics, supervisors, parts personnel.
  • Reliability, punctuality, commitment.
  • Flexibility: willingness to work overtime, shifts, weekend or emergency call-outs as required.

Remuneration & Benefits

  • Salary: depending on experience and employer.
