About GFANZ:

The Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) is an independent, private-sector-led initiative focused on mobilizing capital and removing barriers to investment in the global transition. GFANZ supports financial institutions in mobilizing private capital, addressing barriers to investment, and working with governments, multilateral development banks (MDBs), and development finance institutions (DFIs) to unlock climate finance at scale.

Role Purpose
Recognizing that the transition must be globally inclusive, GFANZ created regional networks to ensure that a broad array of perspectives and expertise are reflected in its work. The Technical Lead will serve as a senior advisor supporting the technical delivery of GFANZ initiatives in Africa, with a strong focus on implementation and execution. The role requires strong financial services experience in Africa, with proven practical implementation skills to support the mobilization of private capital into climate-aligned investments across the continent.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical expertise and leadership on GFANZ Africa's flagship initiatives, including those focused on mobilizing capital, capacity building, and carbon markets.
  • Provide technical leadership and execution support on priorities identified under the Africa Network's workplan, including:

  • Developing detailed workplans and technical execution strategies for specific priorities on derisking, engagement with MDBs, DFIs, and FIs, pipeline development and country platforms.

  • Conduct research, analysis, and develop recommendations on key priorities related to mobilizing private climate finance in Africa.
  • Identify opportunities and provide technical input to the development of approaches that address key risks and enable private sector investment, including country platforms, blended finance, guarantees, and other de-risking tools.
  • Contribute to GFANZ's engagement with MDBs, DFIs, and regulators to address barriers to private capital mobilization and support scaling of new financing tools.

  • Support capacity building on the Africa continent on topics related to capital mobilization and transition finance

  • Identify and develop African FI case studies on successful capital mobilization for climate and adaptation, supporting knowledge sharing across the GFANZ global network.
  • Engage with a broad range of financial institutions, policymakers, NGOs and other African stakeholders in collaboration with regional leadership to develop and deliver strategic convenings that bring together C-suite leaders from the financial services sector and beyond, to develop and socialize expertise and solutions from the Continent.
  • Support GFANZ Africa's engagement with the African Development Bank (AfDB), including initiatives such as the African Financial Alliance on Climate Change (AFAC) and the African Carbon Support Facility (ACSF), and provide technical leadership for the new private capital mobilization initiative to ensure it remains African-led and grounded in African stakeholder priorities, including:

  • Drive consultations with African stakeholders in collaboration with regional leadership, leveraging Advisory Board members (including those with AfDB experience), to inform the design and delivery of the AfDB initiative.

  • Research and adapt lessons from other MDB initiatives to the African context, ensuring approaches are fit-for-purpose and grounded in African stakeholder priorities.
  • Provide program management and technical coordination for the AfDB initiative, including development of workplans, investor outreach, and preparation of technical briefings, presentations, and case studies.

  • Prepare executive-level briefing notes, technical inputs, templates, and presentations for GFANZ leadership, the Africa Chair, regional leadership, the Africa Advisory Board, external partners, and senior stakeholders.

Essential Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years' relevant experience in financial services, development finance, or capital markets in Africa, with a focus on mobilizing capital or structuring transactions.
  • Experience developing and executing financial deals or projects in Africa.
  • Proven ability to build and develop relationships with senior stakeholders in the financial sector on the continent, including private financial institutions, regulators, MDBs, and DFIs.
  • Strong analytical, drafting, research, and presentation skills.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with ability to manage complex projects and multiple stakeholders.
  • Must have a deep knowledge of African financial ecosystems.

Preferred Skills
