About the Role

Do you want to build the digital backbone behind Africa's next wave of renewable energy assets? We're recruiting a Data Engineer to join a high-performing technical team driving centralised monitoring, plant automation, and asset-level performance intelligence across a growing portfolio of power generation and storage sites. This is a role for someone who loves solving real-world engineering problems using clean, reliable, well-structured industrial data.

Responsibilities

1. Centralised Monitoring & Data Infrastructure

  • Design, deploy, and maintain a unified platform for operational and control data
  • Support real-time plant visibility via a central monitoring hub
  • Ensure secure, standardised data exchange from SCADA, PLCs, sensors, and plant instrumentation

2. Automation & Control System Integration

  • Plan and oversee control system upgrades
  • Coordinate SCADA/PLC enhancement initiatives with technical vendors and maintenance partners
  • Define technical scope, implementation logic, and quality standards for automation deployments

3. Asset Performance Intelligence & Predictive Analytics

  • Build, optimise, and govern data pipelines
  • Identify operational inefficiencies using structured industrial datasets
  • Support failure analysis, predictive maintenance frameworks, and performance dashboards
  • Integrate external data sources (weather, irradiance, hydrology, market inputs) to strengthen asset insight

4. Cybersecurity, Backup & Data Integrity

  • Ensure secure access governance across automation environments
  • Maintain redundancy, backups, and recovery planning to protect asset data integrity at scale

5. Documentation & Continuous Improvement

  • Standardise data structures, dashboards, templates and taxonomies
  • Capture lessons learned for future automation and analytics rollouts
  • Evaluate and recommend new tools for monitoring, IoT and plant analytics

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical, Control Systems, Mechatronics, or Computer Engineering
  • 3+ years practical experience in industrial data systems, SCADA/PLC environments, or plant automation

Required Skills

  • Strong foundation in:
  • SQL, Python, MATLAB (or similar)
  • Power BI, Grafana (or similar dashboards)
  • APIs and Cloud-connected IoT hubs (AWS, Azure, GCP, or equivalent)
  • Industrial communication protocols
  • Ability to translate complex data into practical engineering insight
  • Comfortable driving multiple digital initiatives independently
  • Strong communicator with stakeholder-level credibility
  • Willing to travel up to 50% across Africa and international project sites
