Role Description
This is a full-time, remote position for a WordPress Developer located in the City of Johannesburg. The WordPress Developer will be responsible for building, customizing, and maintaining WordPress websites aligned with business and client objectives. Daily tasks include writing clean and efficient code, configuring plugins and themes, integrating third-party systems, and optimizing website performance. The role requires collaboration across various teams to ensure solutions meet both technical and strategic needs.

What you will do.
Support:

  • Participate in discovery sessions to understand client goals, website needs, and existing digital workflows.
  • Assist in creating technical documentation, development plans, and client-facing materials for WordPress builds.
  • Research WordPress themes, plugins, hosting setups, and development frameworks to determine the best technical approach.
  • Support technical walkthroughs, prototypes, and solution presentations.

Implementation:

  • Translate requirements into well-structured WordPress solutions, including custom themes, plugins, and site configurations.
  • Build and customize WordPress sites using PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and popular tools such as ACF, WooCommerce, and Elementor.
  • Integrate APIs, automation tools, and external systems to support advanced functionality.
  • Identify performance bottlenecks and implement improvements related to caching, security, SEO, and site structure.
  • Maintain internal SOPs, development standards, and code documentation.

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with UI/UX designers to bring mockups and wireframes to life through responsive and accessible WordPress designs.
  • Partner with Project Managers and QA to ensure builds are delivered accurately and on time.
  • Support internal teams in understanding WordPress tools, admin workflows, and content management best practices.
  • Contribute to project updates, reporting, and documentation using Jira, ClickUp, or Git-based workflows.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Proven experience in WordPress development, including custom themes, custom plugins, and full-site builds.
  • Strong understanding of PHP, WordPress hooks, custom post types, and REST APIs.
  • Experience with workflow mapping, requirements gathering, and technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with WordPress tools such as WooCommerce, ACF, Yoast, Elementor, WPML, Gravity Forms, or similar.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to simplify complex technical topics.
  • Experience with development/project tools like Git, Jira, ClickUp, Trello, or Bitbucket.
  • A problem-solving mindset, with strong attention to detail and a willingness to tackle evolving technical challenges.
