Job Overview

The Assembly Automation Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining automated assembly systems to improve manufacturing efficiency, product quality, and cost-effectiveness. This role involves working closely with cross-functional teams including initial design engineers, project management through to eventually production, quality, and maintenance to ensure automation equipment is sourced, designed and fabricated to requirement whilst it meets operational goals and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Automation System Design & Development
  • Design and integrate automated assembly equipment, robotics, PLCs, and vision systems.
  • Develop and validate control logic, machine sequencing, and human-machine interfaces (HMI).
  • Lead projects from concept through installation, commissioning, and handover.
  • Well-schooled and conversant with mechanical, electronic, electrical and robotic automation background and understanding.
  • Process Optimization
  • Analyze existing future assembly processes to identify opportunities for automation and continuous improvement.
  • Improve equipment cycle times, reliability, and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
  • Ensure ergonomics and operator safety are built into automation solutions.
  • Ensure that automation with minimal human intervention is achieved in Production processes.
  • Project Management
  • Manage automation projects, including vendor selection, cost estimation, timelines, and resource allocation.
  • Prepare technical documentation, drawings, and specifications for automation projects.
  • Work with design engineers, Project management, Manufacturing management and customer to ensure maximum effectiveness and quality of product.
  • Collaboration & Support
  • Partner with Project team, maintenance and production teams to design, build, troubleshoot, repair, and optimize automated systems.
  • Provide training to operators and maintenance personnel on new equipment.
  • Work with quality engineers to ensure assembly systems meet product quality standards.
  • Train maintenance staff in operation, process and maintenance of equipment.
  • Compliance & Standards
  • Ensure all automation equipment complies with safety, environmental, and industry regulations.
  • Maintain and update documentation related to automation equipment and processes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree, diploma in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, or related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in automation engineering within a manufacturing or assembly environment with a proven high level of automation.
  • Exposure to injection molding, paint and assembly processes where possible.
  • Strong working knowledge of PLC programming (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, etc.), robotics (Fanuc, ABB, KUKA, or similar), drives, pneumatics, hydraulics and vision systems.
  • Experience with CAD design software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Strong project management and communication skills.
