Introduction

Our client in the plastics manufacturing industry is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory / Quality Controller to join their team. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing quality inspections, conducting laboratory testing, and monitoring production to ensure all products manufactured through extrusion blow moulding and injection moulding meet internal and customer quality standards.

This role requires a technically minded individual with a solid understanding of plastics processing, testing procedures, and quality assurance principles.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-process and final product inspections on plastic containers, closures, and components produced through extrusion blow moulding and injection moulding.

  • Perform laboratory tests to evaluate product integrity, thickness, weight, dimensions, colour, and other critical quality parameters.

  • Ensure that all samples meet product specifications and tolerances.

  • Record, analyse, and report test results accurately and timeously.

  • Monitor raw material batches, including verification of resin type, colour masterbatch, and additives.

  • Identify and report any non-conformances, deviations, or process irregularities to production supervisors.

  • Assist with root cause analysis and corrective action implementation in collaboration with the quality and production teams.

  • Maintain calibration records and cleanliness of lab equipment.

  • Conduct visual inspections of moulded parts for defects such as short shots, flash, sink marks, or contamination.

  • Support the setup and verification of production processes during machine start-ups and changeovers.

  • Complete quality checklists, test certificates, and retain sample documentation.

  • Adhere to ISO 9001 / HACCP / GMP standards and site-specific quality procedures.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on product quality and process stability.

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • Matric / Grade 12 (essential).

  • Certificate or Diploma in Quality Management, Polymer Technology, or Plastics Manufacturing (advantageous).

  • Minimum 2 – 4 years' experience in a quality control or laboratory environment within a plastics manufacturing facility.

  • Hands-on experience with extrusion blow moulding and injection moulding processes (essential).

  • Familiarity with plastic material types (HDPE, PP, PET) and their performance characteristics.

  • Knowledge of measuring instruments such as micrometers, callipers, thickness gauges, and weighing scales.

  • Understanding of Statistical Process Control (SPC) and quality documentation.

  • Strong analytical, communication, and reporting skills.

  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and commitment to maintaining high-quality standards.

  • Willingness to work shifts and overtime when required.
