The RoleThe Head of Legal: Africa will lead and manage all legal, regulatory, and compliance matters across Betway Africa's operations in multiple jurisdictions. This role ensures that the business operates within the legal frameworks of each territory, mitigates risk, and supports strategic growth initiatives while maintaining the highest standards of governance and integrity.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Strategy & Governance
• Develop and implement a robust legal strategy aligned with Betway Africa's business objectives.
• Advise senior leadership on legal risks, regulatory changes, and compliance requirements across all territories.
• Ensure adherence to corporate governance standards and internal policies.
Regulatory & Licensing Compliance
• Oversee all licensing requirements for gaming and betting operations in each jurisdiction.
• Maintain strong relationships with regulatory authorities and industry bodies.
• Monitor and interpret changes in legislation, ensuring timely compliance.
Contract Management
• Draft, review, and negotiate complex commercial agreements, including supplier, sponsorship, and partnership contracts.
• Ensure contracts are legally sound and protect the company's interests. Risk Management & Dispute Resolution
• Identify potential legal risks and implement mitigation strategies.
• Manage litigation, disputes, and external counsel engagements across multiple jurisdictions.
Team Leadership & Development
• Build and lead a high-performing legal team across Africa.
• Provide training and guidance on legal and compliance matters to internal stakeholders.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Work closely with Compliance, Finance, HR, and Operations teams to ensure legal alignment across business functions.
• Support M&A activities, market entry strategies, and other strategic projects.

Requisite Skills/ Experience
• Education: LLB or equivalent law degree; admission to practice law in at least one African jurisdiction.
• Experience: Minimum 10 years' post-qualification experience, with at least 5 years in a senior legal leadership role within a multinational or regulated industry (gaming/betting experience preferred).
• Strong knowledge of gaming and betting regulations across Africa.
• Proven experience in multi-jurisdictional legal management.
• Excellent negotiation and contract drafting skills.
• Strategic thinker with strong business acumen.
• Exceptional leadership and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and manage complex, cross-border legal issues.
• High integrity and ethical standards.
• Regular travel across African territories as required.
