Senior Primary Electrical Engineer – Utility-Scale Renewables

Are you the kind of engineer who sees a blank site layout and immediately starts visualising cable routes, substations, and clean single-line diagrams?

We are looking for a
Senior Electrical Engineer
to play a key role in the delivery of
utility-scale renewable energy projects
across South Africa, including
solar PV, wind, and battery energy storage systems (BESS)
.

You will be joining an established
engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) environment
that is expanding its
engineering capability
, working on complex, large-scale projects that are already shaping the country's energy future.

This role is hands-on, technical, and collaborative - ideal for someone who enjoys owning the primary electrical design from concept through execution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading
    primary electrical design
    for utility-scale PV, wind, and BESS projects
  • Developing and reviewing
    SLDs, KLDs, layouts
    , and overall plant electrical concepts
  • Performing and overseeing
    MV, LV, AC and DC cable sizing
    , routing, and selection
  • Designing complete
    earthing and lightning protection systems
    , including: Fault current analysis and step and touch potential studies
  • Supporting
    civil and foundation design
    , including construction drawings
  • Coordinating closely with
    owners, consultants, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Participating in
    site surveys, preliminary layouts, and technical planning
  • Travelling to site when required to support project delivery

Requirements:

  • B.Eng / B.Sc in Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current)
  • 5–8+ years' experience
    in primary electrical design for
    utility-scale renewable projects
  • Strong working knowledge of
    South African standards and grid codes
    , including: SANS and NRS 048, NRS 097, and related requirements
  • Proven experience with electrical design tools such as:
  • CYMCAP, CYMGRID, CDEGS, DIgSILENT, PSSE
    (or equivalent)
  • Confidence working independently while also collaborating across disciplines
  • ECSA registration
    (or working towards it) is highly advantageous
  • Willingness to travel for project and site requirements
