The Role: Hub Engineer

We're looking for a highly skilled and proactive Hub Engineer to join our Engineering team in South Africa. This role is critical to owning and evolving Avanti's IP-to-RF hub infrastructure, ensuring it meets both current demands and future scalability needs.

As a Hub Engineer, you'll serve as a product owner for critical infrastructure across our satellite gateways—designing robust systems, leading engineering improvements, resolving complex issues, and supporting 24/7 operations through an on-call rota.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the entire lifecycle of hub infrastructure - from design and deployment to optimisation and refresh.
• Provide advanced engineering support for service design, delivery, and operational readiness.
• Evaluate, select, and integrate new hub technologies to drive scalability and cost-effectiveness.
• Identify and implement improvements to resilience, performance, and customer experience.
• Act as a senior escalation point and lead root cause analysis (RCA) on complex issues.
• Collaborate with internal teams and partners to deliver end-to-end customer solutions.
• Define and maintain engineering standards, documentation, and best practices.
• Ensure smooth transitions of new services into operations with effective knowledge sharing.
• Mentor and coach junior engineers to support team growth and capability.

Skills & Qualifications

Essential:

• Proven experience managing the design and lifecycle of communications infrastructure.
• Deep knowledge of satellite communications, VSAT hub platforms (including Newtec Dialog), and RF systems.
• Strong IP networking and diagnostic skills, including packet analysis (e.g., Wireshark).
• Comfortable managing configurations, applying updates, and executing change control.
• Ability to troubleshoot multi-tiered systems and virtualised environments.
• Skilled in adopting and mastering new technologies, becoming a subject matter expert.
• Excellent communicator across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers.

Desirable:

• Degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, or related field.
• Experience with Linux server administration (CentOS, RHEL, Debian).
• Scripting (Bash, Python) for automation or incident response.
• Familiarity with clustering, failover, replication, and high availability.
• Knowledge of tools like Grafana, iPERF, DataMiner.
• CCNA or equivalent certification.

This role includes participation in an On-Call rota to support 24/7 operations and emergency maintenance.
