About The Role
The Strategic Communications & Storytelling Manager leads ACA's communications strategy and oversees the organisation's storytelling, media, and digital engagement. The role is central to ensuring cohesive messaging across the organisation, amplifying youth voices, and positioning ACA as a leading voice in the African climate justice movement.
This position requires a strategic communicator who combines creativity with strong organisational and leadership skills. The successful candidate will manage both day-to-day communications activities and long-term strategic initiatives that support ACA's mission and growth.
Responsibilities
Since this role is management level, the Strategic Communications & Storytelling Manager directly manages the Digital Communications Coordinator, and is responsible for working with the Managerial Team on governance and organisational oversight. It's important to note that since we are a small team, managerial roles still require a level of implementation. The split of work expected is:
- 60% – Strategic communications and implementation (working in the Communications Department with the Digital Communications Coordinator)
- 40% – Governance, organisational oversight, partnership management, project management, movement-building, and team building (in collaboration with the Managerial Team)
Roles and Responsibilities
- Strategic Communications
- Lead the development and implementation of ACA's organisational communications strategy.
- Ensure cohesive messaging across all communication channels and teams.
- Maintenance of a strong visual brand for the organisation, ensuring that our communications outputs are strikingly recognisable and consistent.
- Oversee management of the website, email databases, and social media platforms.
- Coordinate communication strategies for ACA's programmes and campaigns in collaboration with programme managers.
- Develop centralised communications documents and maintain consistent tone and storytelling across the organisation.
- Storytelling and Narrative Development
- Design and facilitate initiatives that strengthen the communication and storytelling skills of youth activists. For example, our ACA Writing Circle and storytelling skills workshops.
- Develop Afrocentric, justice-centred narratives that position young Africans as climate leaders.
- Produce and edit high-quality written and multimedia content, including op-eds, blog articles, and reports.
- Media Engagement and Brand Building
- Build and maintain relationships with journalists, editors, and media partners.
- Draft and distribute press releases and manage media queries.
- Track press coverage and maintain updated media contact lists.
- Coordinate media training, spokesperson development, and ambassador support for public engagements.
- Strengthen ACA's brand presence across local and international media.
- Digital Communications and Audience Engagement
- Lead audience mapping and engagement research to inform communication strategies.
- Oversee ACA's digital presence, including social media performance, analytics, and audience growth.
- Support the Digital Communications Coordinator in content creation and community management.
- Ensure ACA's online platforms remain vibrant, accessible, and aligned with the organisation's values.
- Campaigns and Partnerships
- Collaborate on movement-wide campaigns.
- Develop and coordinate communication outputs with coalition partners to ensure unified messaging.
- Strengthen partnerships through consistent digital engagement and joint storytelling initiatives.
- Funder and Organisational Communications
- Lead the production of ACA's annual and impact reports.
- Draft and disseminate quarterly organisational updates for funders and partners.
- Support the development of narrative content for grant proposals and reports.
- Maintain consistent communication with supporters and funders about ACA's progress and impact.
