Led by chef-owner Shaun Scrooby, VUUR reimagines open-flame cooking by using fire not just as a technique but as an essential element of its culinary philosophy. Each dish is crafted with care using flame, embers, and smoke to amplify the natural flavors of locally-sourced, sustainable ingredients from farmers, butchers, and foragers. Role Description
We are seeking a dedicated and talented Sous Chef to join our team at VUUR Restaurant. As a Sous Chef, you will be responsible for supporting the Head Chef in daily kitchen operations, managing kitchen staff, supervising food preparation, maintaining exceptional food quality standards, and ensuring adherence to health and safety regulations. You will play an integral role in menu planning and bringing our philosophy of fire-focused cooking to life. This is a full-time, on-site position based in Stellenbosch, South Africa.
Qualifications
- Strong culinary skills in food preparation, presentation, and open-flame cooking techniques
- Proficiency in kitchen management, including staff supervision and inventory control
- Understanding of food safety and sanitation standards
- Creativity and innovation in creating dishes with sustainably sourced ingredients
- Exceptional time management, organizational, and communication skills
- Experience working in high-paced, high-quality culinary environments
- Formal culinary training and relevant certifications are preferred
- Passion for sustainability and respect for farm-to-table practices
