Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) invites applications for a PhD training position within its basic and translational science unit, based in the Ndung'u laboratory.

Overview of Duties:

Full funding is available to support a doctoral student for 36 months effective immediately. The student will be supported to develop a proposal investigating HIV coreceptor usage and cellular tropism in a longitudinal acute infection cohort. The project will characterize coreceptor usage in transmitted/founder, reservoir-derived, and rebound viruses from individuals living with HIV-1 clade C. Analyses will include genotypic assessments, cell line–based assays, and cellular tropism studies using primary T cells and monocyte-derived macrophages. The goal of this work is to define the determinants of coreceptor usage and cellular tropism across different stages of infection and viral populations, thereby advancing understanding of HIV persistence and informing cure strategies. Registration for the doctoral study will be with the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Qualifications and experience:

The project will require the student to have an MSc or equivalent in virology, immunology, microbiology, biochemistry, bioinformatics or a related field.  The ideal applicant will have experience of PCR, sequencing and sequence analysis, tissue culture and/or flow cytometry.
