The Role: Assistant Diesel Mechanic

We are seeking a proactive and skilled Assistant Diesel Mechanic to join our technical team on an initial 8-month contract. This role is essential for ensuring the optimal performance, reliability, and safety compliance of our entire diesel generator fleet, which is used for commercial and industrial backup power.

You will report directly to the Senior Diesel Mechanic and will be instrumental in executing maintenance schedules and emergency repairs both in our workshop and on client sites across the region.

Key Responsibilities

  • Routine Maintenance: Assist with scheduled services, preventative maintenance, and detailed inspections of various diesel engine brands (e.g., Perkins, Volvo, Cummins).
  • Troubleshooting & Repair: Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and cooling system faults on standby generator sets up to 500kVA.
  • Installation Support: Assist the electrical team with the positioning and setup of generators, ensuring mechanical stability and fuel system integrity.
  • Documentation: Accurately complete job cards, maintenance logs, and contribute to the equipment health and safety file.
  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to all OHS Act regulations and Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) for working on heavy plant and electrical systems.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Education: Minimum N4 National Certificate in Diesel/Motor Trade, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent technical qualification. N5/N6 or Trade Test (Diesel Mechanic) will be a distinct advantage.
  • Experience: Proven practical experience (minimum 1-2 years) working on diesel engines, preferably those used in generator or heavy machinery applications.
  • Technical Skills: Strong understanding of diesel engine mechanics, basic auto-electrics (starters, alternators, control panels), and cooling systems.
  • Safety Certification (MANDATORY): A valid, recognized First Aid Certificate (Level 1 or higher).
  • Soft Skills: Must be reliable, physically fit, and able to work effectively as part of a small, focused team.
  • Licence: Valid Code 8/10 (B) driver's licence is essential.
