**Main purpose of the job**:

- Contribute to the HIV vaccine trial Diagnostics: To receive and import specimens into HVTN LIMS and related administration and to assist with laboratory testing (Serology and Molecular) if required - this should be done with appropriate supervision e.g. Medical Technologist/Scientist

**Location**:

- **NICD - Sandringham, Johannesburg**

**Key performance areas**:

- Adherence to the principles of good clinical and laboratory practice (GCLP) and ensuring laboratory cleanliness and safety
- Receiving, processing, and preparing aliquots of samples received, according to the various Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and/or trial protocols
- Storing the samples as per SOP with the entry of sample information into the various information systems
- Accurate completion and capture of information from the sample requisition forms received
- Continuous freezer and database checks to ensure the accuracy of sample locations
- Routine monitoring and maintenance on the equipment used as required (and documented) as per GCLP
- Preparation of media and reagents to specification according to the various SOPs
- Stocktaking of consumables/reagents used and requesting the ordering of items in good time
- Ensuring lab cleanliness and order
- Appropriate management, storage, and disposal of bio-hazardous waste and toxic materials
- Preparation and shipment of clinical material as per sponsor requirements
- Carry out any additional duties as required by the academic staff within the group

**Required minimum education and training**:

- **Medical Laboratory Technician registered with HPSCA**:

- **BSC/BTECH - desirable**:

- **Good Clinical Practice (GCP) essential**

**Required minimum work experience**:

- **Experience in Laboratory work and related administration, minimum 3 years of laboratory experience**

**Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities**:

- Certification in good clinical laboratory practice (GCLP) and basic health and safety
- Ordered, systematic, and analytical. Exceptional organizational and administration skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and laboratory systems
- Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
- Self-motivated and able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Knowledge of HIV and HIV vaccine trials
