CONTROL TECHNICAL ASSISTANT

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent will be responsible for:

- General management of the laboratory (planning analyses, reports and data-storage);
- Financial management (cost analyses & orders & capital equipment);
- Compiling reports on completed analyses, processing and storing data;
- Practical training of undergraduate students;
- Support for post graduate students in the different feed analyses;
- Performing specialised feed analyses which may include in vitro digestibility, in vitro gas production techniques and gas chromatography, bioassay, fibre fraction analyses, nitrogen and phytochemical analyses;
- Service and maintenance of lab equipment;
- Operation of an Instron Tensile Test System;
- Mineral analyses using ICP-OES is highly recommended;
- Good Laboratory Practice and development of new methods.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

- Relevant BSc degree in Analytical Chemistry or BSc Agric Animal Science;
- At least three (3) years’ experience in:

- A research laboratory or animal feeds laboratory;
- Specialised feed sample analysis;
- Report writing;
- Financial administration and budgeting;
- Understanding of and experience in the required techniques / analyses as listed above.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

- Knowledge in the field of Animal Science, animal feed analyses and the relevant technology applied;
- Proficiency and skills in feed analyses and techniques;
- Interpretation of basic animal feed analysis data;
- Human Relations;
- Appropriate language and communication skills;
- Good interpersonal skills;
- Teamwork and team leadership skill;
- Good computer skills (Windows, MS Office, internet).

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

- Knowledge of Rumen Simulation Technique Equipment (RUSITEC);
- NIRS calibration and validation for analysis of commonly used feedstuffs;
- Postgraduate qualification in Animal Nutrition or Analytical chemistry;

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
