Tailings Storage Facility Specialist

**Barrick Gold is seeking to recruit a Tailings Storage Facility Specialist as the Lead for the Africa Middle East Region. The incumbent will provide corporate best practice guidance and senior level review to Barrick’s AME sites and projects and will join the senior leadership team and deliver geotechnical support to all AME operations and closed sites. The TSF Specialist will assist and ensure site’s compliance to Barrick’s Corporate Standards, the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management and other applicable Standards and Guidelines. He/she will act as a link between the sites and senior leadership by conveying critical information on the performance of the facilities and assisting the concerned parties in the decision-making required to mitigate identified risks and will liaise with the Engineer of Record providing technical review and guidance**:
**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Serve as technical advisor on Tailings Facilities for the AME Region and as a Senior Reviewer for Barrick
- Conduct critical review of site investigation plans, technical report, engineering designs and construction drawings and specifications for tailings facilities
- Stay up to date with the state of practice in geotechnical engineering applicable to the design and construction of earth structures and tailings facilities
- Assist in promoting and developing standardizations of engineering practices across Barrick’s operations and projects in relation to facilities management, stewardship and site monitoring and surveillance
- Assist and ensure site’s compliance with applicable laws and local regulatory requirements, Barrick Corporate Standards the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management and other applicable Standards or Guidelines
- Review the Dam Safety Inspections, Dam Safety Reviews and Assurance Reviews and ensure that the recommendations are acted upon
- Assist the sites in preparing for the Independent Third-Party Reviews, attend the scheduled reviews and ensure that the recommendations are acted upon
- Support the corporate function in carrying out Assurance Reviews on Tailings Facilities not under your responsibility
- Conduct regular performance reviews of the different sites in the AME Region and as needed develop appropriate risk mitigation plans
- Lead and participate in technical evaluations and risk assessments and assist in the development of mitigation strategies
- Engage and interact with consultants providing assessment and directive recommendations of technical work
- Mentor, train and develop site-based engineers

**QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Registered Professional Engineer
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geological Engineering
- Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering
- 10+ years of relevant practical experience in the design of Tailings Facilities
- Experience in tailings and water dam design, construction, management, operation, and closure
- Experience in geotechnical site investigations, soil characterization and interpretation of in-situ and laboratory tests
- Excellent oral and written communication skills

**OTHER REQUIREMENTS**:

- Experience in working in mining environments
- Ability and willingness to travel 30-50% of the time, primarily to locations in AME, but also North and South America
- Good health, including ability and tolerance to work in high altitude environments
- A good understanding of the current and evolving tailings management and best practices
- A good knowledge of GISTM, CDA, ICOLD, ANCOLD, SANS, MAC, and other industry guidelines
- Ability to work effectively with colleagues and contractors of varying cultures and disciplines
- Project Management experience
