Section Manager

The role

**REPORTS TO**

Function Manager or any other person appointed to supervise him/her from time to time.

**PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE**

This position is responsible for providing professional services on projects within the Functional group including management of geotechnical works and deliverables for medium/large projects, and managing professional teams. The position is further responsible for project acquisition, financial management and delivery of all projects within the Section, including the management of staff within the group to optimise utilisation and achievement of project milestones.

**KEY MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Market development and proactive approach in developing sustainable workstreams
- Assist Function Manager in developing business strategies for the section in conjunction with the Functional Group’s Business Plan and objectives
- Develop and maintain existing key client relationships and maintain client satisfaction
- Preparation and submission of tenders, EOIs and proposals for the section and to provide input into large infrastructure projects as required in line with Instrument of Delegation
- Deliver project wins for the Section
- Ensure appropriate technical standards, and ISO9001 Quality Assurance Management System requirements are maintained
- Establish and maintain internal contacts within SMEC South Africa to source the appropriate skills
- Facilitating staff development - this includes keeping them informed, providing suitable training, mentoring, suitable opportunities, planning career paths, maintaining professional ethics and professional standards of behaviour
- Maintain professional development and remain abreast of advances in chosen technical field
- Invoicing to clients, updating progress and follow ups on invoicing
- Directly responsible for project budgets and achieving revenue target
- Responsible for making sure the local function is profitable (managing overheads and budgets)
- Monthly financial reporting
- Meeting budgetary and time constraints of various projects whilst maintaining appropriate technical standards and QA requirements
- Responsible for assigning tasks, reviewing work and performance management of direct reports

**KEY TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Responsible for the general management of medium/large projects
- Author competent technical reports of acceptable technical and presentational quality
- Review work of all those in the project team and take responsibility for their work, present/represent their technical work.
- Supervise Engineering Geologists, Engineers or Technicians in undertaking geotechnical investigations, analysis, design and reporting
- Supervise Engineering Geologists, Engineers or Technicians in checks and inspections of geotechnical structures or construction works for compliance with design and specifications, including monitoring and proposing remedial actions
- Development and/or improvement of function group specific investigation and design procedures

**RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
**- BEng or BSc degree in civil engineering or BSc (Honours) degree in engineering geology (or geology) or higher degree in these fields from an accredited university/college
- Post graduate qualification is advantageous
- 10 years of practical experience in the geotechnical/engineering geology field
- Relevant professional registration: _Pr. Eng. _(ECSA) or _Pr. Sci. Nat. (_SACNAP)
- Experience in specifying, managing and supervising complex geotechnical investigations
- Experience in geotechnical/ geological data collection, analysis and geotechnical design
- Demonstrable ability to identify, define and solve complex engineering problems
- Leadership, engineering and project management skills
- Application of modern profession specific QA and QC frameworks
- Interpersonal communication skills to integrate a culturally diverse and multi-disciplinary environment
