**Technical Director - Electronic Manufacturing Company: Johannesburg, South Africa**

An exciting opportunity to join a highly respected electronic manufacturing company as Head of Technical. Operating in the defence space, the organisation is widely regarded as a design and manufacturing authority.

The remit of the role is big and complex, the Technical Director will report to the Managing Director and be a key member of the Executive Committee. The Technical Director will be at the forefront of technology in the organisation and will lead and supervise a technical team of Line Managers, Engineers and Technicians in the R&D, Instrumentation, Production Support and Project Management departments. He /She will provide leadership and management direction of the above departments to engineer new products and solutions and provide effective production equipment and services aimed at supporting the production of products.

The Technical Director will also manage technical solution risks for the company’s product portfolio by providing technical assessment and support to the Operations, Production, Business Development and Commercial functions.

**Role Responsibilities**
- Provide support via the Technical function to Operations/Production
- Manage a complement of circa 40 staff members, including engineers, technical and other support staff.
- Review and write reports.
- Approve expenditures, make decisions on the purchase of required equipment.
- Manage the R&D department, Proto-type Manufacturing department, Configuration department, Drawing Office, Instrumentation and Pre-Production department.
- Set scientific and technical goals within broad outlines in consultation with the executive management team.
- Direct, review, and approve product design and changes.
- Develop and implement policies, standards and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed in the company.
- Prepare budgets and direct the overall management of research projects.
- Confer with senior management, production, and marketing staff to discuss project specifications and procedures.
- Coordinate and direct projects, overseeing detailed plans to accomplish goals. Direct the integration of technical activities.
- Analyse technology resource needs, and based upon information relating to market demand, plan and assess the feasibility of projects.
- Manage the planning and direct the installation, testing, operation, maintenance and repair of required instrumentation and related equipment
- Technical leadership to ensure the successful qualification of products with customer entities (e.g., Safety Review Boards)
- Technical representation at internal and external meetings.
- Lead and direct technical investigation teams.
- Generate technical reports for senior management meetings.

**Key Experience Required**:

- Managed a team of at least 30 engineering/technical staff
- 5 years + experience at executive level
- 10 years’ experience at senior management level
- Manufacturing and electronics industry experience
- Design / development environment
- Track record in research and development

**Knowledge/Skills required**:

- Management in a manufacturing environment
- Managing budgets, finances/costings (sign off on project costs)
- Reporting
- Electronics knowledge/skills

**Qualifications**:

- Electronic or Mechanical Engineering degree

**Salary**: R1,500,000.00 - R2,200,000.00 per year

Ability to commute/relocate:

- Johannesburg, Gauteng: Reliably commute or willing to relocate with an employer-provided relocation package (required)
