Manager: Fibre Lab

**Purpose**: Managing the fibre lab in terms of ensuring targeted production numbers, quality control, staff management and OHS. **Responsibilities**: **Production** - Conduct scheduled and ad hoc quality inspections - Set up and operate laboratory equipment in preparation for tests. - Prepare specimens or material for testing. - Perform routine and ad-hoc tests and procedures (e.g. preparation of material). - Trace and record results of production processes and changes - Oversee and assist with the proper de-reeling of cable - Oversee and assist with the fibre termination process (terminate, cure and cleave fibre). - Ensure the correct and up to standard polishing of fibre cables. - Ensure the final IL/RL testing is done correctly - Ensure the proper packing of cable (cylinder wrapping) - Do regular stock takes and ensure adequate reserves on hand - Ensure stock levels are sufficient - Assist with the management of daily operations within the fibre lab **Expense Management** - Manage losses (connectors and cables) and minimise them - Ensure that budgets are adhered to; actual vs budgeted expenses, < = 2% expenditure over budget, to be evaluated bi-annually **Customer Satisfaction** - Ensure targets are achieved **Staff Management** - Performance Management - Conduct performance assessments for 100% of staff (fibre operators) on a bi-annual basis. - Tasks and Responsibilities - Ensure all in department have up to date job descriptions. - Skills - Ensure staff are skilled to carry out what is expected of them, recommend training, coach, develop. Observation, evaluation and appraisals to be used as indication. - Have monthly meetings with staff; schedule those meetings on outlook with the operations head so that it is diarised. **Legal Compliance, ISO and Housekeeping** - Adhere to and enforce OHSACT and ISO requirements within the department. Audit reports to be used as measure. - Maintain a clean and safe work area in accordance with standard general housekeeping and maintenance operations in a laboratory. **General** - Generate clear and specific operating procedures. - Assist with the implementation of methods. - Store supplies and distribute a variety of items throughout the laboratory. - Assist with all necessary laboratory activities as and when required. - Ensure that internal customer requirements are addressed. - Comply to all quality, legislative and policy requirements **Qualification and Experience**: - Matric - Technical qualification would be advantageous - At least 2 years’ experience within fibre product industry - Managing people experience of at least 2 years required at a similar **Skills and Knowledge**: - Understand the polishing techniques required for the various connectors (UPC/APC) - Must know how to cleave and cure fibre optic cable - Must understand the parameters on IL/RL test results - Must be able to diagnose and repair high DB readings - Supervisory knowledge - Good understanding of internal process and procedure
