**Job description**
- Strategy and conservation management plan development_
- Workshops - stakeholder engagement, coordination of roleplayers, working up of workshop products
- Assist with writing up of strategies and conservation management plans
- Park conservation & science support_
- Assist with reintroduction feasibility assessments, risk-benefit analyses and other AP conservation tools
- Assist with providing conservation decision-support on any items in parks’ LTSSs
- Assist with coordination of engagement with IUCN Specialist Groups
- Undertake/provide support for high priority, park-specific conservation investigations for decision-support
- Strategic Research partnerships_
- Administer research proposal evaluation and associated admin (e.g. research contracts, MOUs) with parks
- Assist with establishment and management of local and international research partnerships
- Prioritise key research areas with parks, and solicit research/scientific papers with strategic research partners
- Capacity-building and Mentoring_
- “Twinning programme” - assisting with development and coordination of AP’s dedicated conservation science capacity building in-country
- Ecological Monitoring_
- Support parks with development and implementation of ecological Core Metrics and park-specific metrics
- Support parks with fine-tuning monitoring methodology, where applicable
- Assist parks with monitoring data analysis, including automation with scripts where possible
- Work closely with AP’s Business Intelligence Unit to ensure high standard of data quality
- Writing_
- Assist with the development of position statements

Assist with peer-reviewed journal articles from AP-managed parks/portfolio-wide reviews

**Job requirements**

**Education**
- minimum requirement: Phd in conservation-related ecological field
- Post Doc in conservation ecology desirable

**Experience**
- Minimum of 5 years practical experience in providing science support to conservation organisations
- Significant experience with ecological monitoring and data analysis, population estimates, population modelling and other applied conservation modelling
- Excellent scientific writing skills, with a publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals
- Experience writing conservation-related strategies and management plans (policy writing desirable)
- Experience with applied conservation genetics
- GIS and conservation-related spatial modelling experience
- Experience working mentoring junior staff/conservation students
- Significant experience engaging with conservation and other statutory authorities (e.g. SANBI), including experience with wildlife permitting
- Established ecological/applied conservation academic network
- Experience working with or, preferably, on IUCN Species Survial Commission specialist groups
- Demonstrable experience in conservation-related fund raising

**Skills and abilities**
- High level of technical and scientific understanding, writing and spoken English skills
- Understands, writes and speaks French
- Willingness to travel extensively, primarily within Africa
- Willingness and ability to work independently, including in remote locations
- Strong team player, with excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to produce outputs and outcomes at the fast pace required by AP
