Position details:

Reports to: Production Manager
Reporting, total staff compliment: 6 Team Leaders - Daily process monitoring, sample testing, data recording. 100 Machine Operators.
Primary purpose: To be responsible for the tube manufacturing department - fundamentally based on three pillars. The first objective is to reach and maintain the set departmental targets. Secondly the tube mill must be geared towards minimizing unnecessary material waste. Processes must be optimized / managed to eliminate material damage and non-conforming product. The third component forming part of the position has its roots in the complex area of people management. From the Tube Manufacturing Superintendent, it is required that employees are understood / motivated and where problems arise it be relieved in a professional manner.

Job description / core competencies:
Strategy and management:

- Linked to the company strategy and strategic objectives, determine the departmental strategy and strategic objectives.
- Determine the action plans required to ensure the achievement of the departmental strategy/strategic objectives.
- Monitor the achievement of the departmental strategy/strategic objectives monthly.
- Authorize (Qmuzik system) and sign off on departmental expenses.
- Liaise closely with Finance Department and provide input/assistance with month end and year end reporting as and when so required.

Control over process variables:

- Active management of the production functions (both Quality Assurance and production targets) in the factory daily; including financial/expense cost control and decision making of non-conformances.
- Expected to engage with employees and resolve personnel related issues.
- Ensure that all tube-mill employees adhere to the rules of engagement in accordance with the procedures as laid down and documented.
- Generate new ideas and innovate as needed.
- Enforce adherence of quality and production personnel to set standards and procedures. Take action if not done.
- Take action if negative trends are seen; this in order to correct the process before it results in possible non-conformance.
- Inspire a quality conscience mentality in the workforce.
- Do in-depth analysis of data and analyse trends. Following this, inform as needed and implement corrective and preventive behaviour and actions as needed.
- Ensure that master monitoring equipment is calibrated - where possible to SANAS standards - as scheduled.
- Perform scheduled validation and monitoring of all general measuring instruments (verniers, micrometers, rulers, etc.) and ensure that the needed records are kept up to date.
- Create and introduce visual management aids/support on critical line items; A3 visual inspection documents, visual Work Instructions if needed.
- Liaise closely with all departments on site to ensure that communication channels are kept open; these include suppliers, sales planning, technical, casting and finance.

QMS, process and product certification:

- Conduct together with QA (annual or twice per year if so needed) internal process audits and ensure that non-conformances and OFIs when initiated are addressed in a timely fashion.
- Conduct and assist QA Manager with (every two years if practicable) supplier audits on critical suppliers for the company (Southern Africa region only for now, as and when needed).
- Ensure certification and compliance of applicable product to national, and where needed, international requirements and standards. Where gaps are identified, institute actions to address these.
- Instil a quality conscience mentality within all levels of the workforce through continued guidance and coaching on relevant quality principles.
- Stay abreast of changing regulatory and statutory requirements at all times (this includes QMS ISO 9001 as well as relevant SANS and international standards).

20-Keys:

- Manage and implement a successful 20-keys improvement-program within the tube-mill, focusing on the 5-6 keys as set per department for a start.
- Actively drive a mentality of continuous improvement (Kaizen) as a result of the above actions.
- Ensure that internal self-auditing of the departments is done.
- Adhere to all 20 key improvement measures and maintain the 20 key system as the foundation towards effective production output.

Toolroom and tool storage:

- Ensure that all plugs and dies as stored are well controlled at all times.
- Ensure that plugs and dies are numbered and stored, where practicable, as sets.
- Ensure that all plugs and dies are dimensionally check
