**Bioinformaticist Researcher (Grade R) - 2 year contract**

**Research Unit in Bioinformatics (RUBi) in the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Bioinformatics**

**Main Objectives**

Research is the main focus, and teaching is not a core function. Where the researchers are on contract, raising funds for their employment, contract research shall be regarded as equivalent to more traditional forms of research.

**The Requirements**
- At least a PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or Computer Science, or another cognate discipline and exposure to
- structural bioinformatics.
- Assist with the supervision of postgraduate students.
- Writing of research articles.
- Experience working with sequence data relevant to human pathogens and/or experience in network analysis as part of graph theory
- and/or tool development is highly advantageous.
- A strong understanding of the Python programming language and Typescript.
- Experience with Javascript component libraries (knowledge of either ReactJS or KnockoutJS).
- An ability to build and construct APIs (such as REST and/or GraphQL) to incorporate data from Backend services into the Frontend.
- Familiarity with backend frameworks such as Django, Flask, and/or Express.
- Experience with Git and other version control systems.
- An ability to manage relational database systems (such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS SQl Server, etc).
- Experience with working with web servers (such as Apache and Nginx).
- Good algorithmic, analytical, and problem-solving abilities, including retaining these skills in high-pressure situations.
- Capacity for independent learning of new skills as they are required.
- Some administrative experience, albeit in informal contexts, e.g., student or sports clubs, work experiences.

**Remuneration per annum (Grade R)**:
Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R457 874.52

Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R460 000.00
