Associate Economist

-The main purpose of this position is to collect and process relevant data, to compile and analyse national accounts statistics, and to provide accurate economic information to support economic policy formulation at the South African Reserve Bank (SARB). -Detailed Description Collect, compile and analyse national accounts statistics, and share findings with more senior specialists. - Input data across all short-term economic indicators and disciplines covered in the national accounts area into the structured database to maintain a comprehensive, updated and accurate statistical database. - Check the accuracy of data received, validate source data, and liaise frequently with respondents. - Assist in special projects. - Conduct methodological research. - Analyse and reconcile new data from financial statements and other national accounts statistics. - Monitor and analyse the economic conditions affecting the economy in general. - Stay abreast of new thinking in research and statistical methodologies, considering the implications of these changes for own work. - Compile thorough, comprehensive and descriptive reports. - Engage with external stakeholders, representing the SARB. - Prepare briefings and presentations on research findings and statistical analysis, and present these to the internal team. Job Requirements an Honours degree (NQF 8) in Accounting, Economics, Statistics and/or a related field; - at least two years of experience in the field of economic analysis, research and/or macroeconomics, microeconomics or financial economics; - a proven track record in economic analysis; - proficiency in English (both written and spoken); and - proficiency in the use of Microsoft (MS) Office products such as MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The following would be an added advantage: the ability to code in R or related open-source software. Additional requirements include: an affinity for statistics and economic analysis; - being task-oriented; - time management skills to operate in a deadline-driven environment; - the ability to work independently as well as within a team/project environment; - excellent communication skills (both written and spoken); - excellent report-writing skills; - initiative and problem-solving skills; - analytical skills; - the ability to pay attention to detail; and - good interpersonal skills.
