Data Centre Technician

The Successful Data Centre Technician specializing in fire and suppression systems will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of fire detection, alarm, and suppression systems in a data centre environment. The role involves ensuring all systems comply with industry standards and regulations to protect critical infrastructure and personnel from fire-related risks.
**Key Responsibilities**:
**1. System Installation and Setup**:
- Install fire detection systems, including smoke and heat detectors, in compliance with design specifications.
- Deploy fire suppression systems, such as clean agent systems (e.g., FM-200, Novec 1230), water mist systems, or inert gas systems.
**2. Maintenance and Inspections**:
- Conduct regular inspections of fire alarms, suppression systems, and associated equipment.
- Test and verify system functionality, including alarms, control panels, and discharge mechanisms.
- Perform preventive maintenance to ensure continuous operation and readiness.
**3. Troubleshooting and Repairs**:
- Diagnose faults in fire and suppression systems and take corrective actions promptly.
- Replace or repair malfunctioning components, such as detectors, valves, or control units.
**4. Compliance and Documentation**:
- Ensure all systems meet local and international fire safety regulations (e.g., NFPA standards).
- Maintain detailed logs of inspections, tests, and repairs for auditing and reporting purposes.
**5. Emergency Response and Drills**:
- Collaborate with the data centre management team to develop and conduct fire response drills.
- Respond to alarms or incidents and assist in coordinating evacuation or suppression efforts.
**6. Integration with Data Centre Systems**:
- Interface fire systems with Building Management Systems (BMS) for centralized monitoring and alerts.
- Work with IT and facilities teams to minimize disruptions during system maintenance or upgrades.
**Qualifications**:Educational Requirements**:
- Diploma or certification in Fire Safety Engineering, Electronics, or a related field.
- Certification in fire systems installation and maintenance (e.g., NFPA, FIA, or equivalent).
**Technical Skills**:
- In-depth knowledge of fire detection and suppression technologies, including clean agents and gas suppression systems.
- Experience with fire alarm control panels and monitoring systems.
- Understanding of electrical systems and safety protocols.
- Familiarity with standards such as NFPA 72, NFPA 2001, and ISO 14520.
**Soft Skills**:
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Attention to detail and commitment to safety.
- Effective communication skills to interact with stakeholders and team members.
**Experience**:
- 2-5 years of experience in fire system installation, maintenance, or related roles.
- Previous work experience in a data centre or mission-critical environment (preferred).
**Work Environment**:
- Controlled indoor environments with occasional work in mechanical or service areas.
- Regular exposure to confined spaces and high-noise environments.
- On-call duties to respond to system alerts or emergencies.
