Sanlam Life and Savings Actuarial focusses on life insurance actuarial services for the South African life insurance licences within the Sanlam Group. Sanlam Retail Affluent, Sanlam Corporate and Sanlam Retail Mass’s actuarial reporting, modelling, product development and risk and capital management is within the ambit of our focus. In addition to this we also offer Business Intelligence and data analytics business support.
What will you do?
**Output/Core Tasks**:
As the head of the internal actuarial consulting team you will need to build and grow a consulting capability that will focus on servicing SLS Actuarial and its clients.
Given the large volume of BAU production work that the existing SLS Actuarial teams need to produce it is hard to allocate priority time to ad-hoc requests, automation, optimising processes, research and other projects. There is also a constant (and growing) need from the business for actuarial support on non-standard projects. Allocating this non-standard work to existing teams is not optimal as it slows down the progress on these projects and over-burdens the BAU teams. An appropriate focus on optimisation and automation will open up capacity and aid the execution of BAU tasks within the existing SLS Actuarial teams.
Therefore, a separate actuarial team that can act as consultants to provide support on ad-hoc projects will be established. This multi-disciplinary team will have a diversity of experience as well as the ability to draw expertise from specialists in all the areas in actuarial (reporting, pricing, capital, investigations, BI).
As the Head of the team you will need to run the team as a separate business through the following:
Engage within the existing SLS Actuarial teams to identify the processes and tasks that need to be prioritised
Evaluate on a cost benefit basis which tasks will take priority and obtain SLS Actuarial Manco approval
Source the necessary skills and execute the tasks to improve efficiency and create capacity
Develop use cases to aid a business plan for future development and growth of the consulting team
Grow the team organically and based on a needs basis and delivery focus assessment motivate for your own budget and resource requirements
Ensure execution with embedment in such a manner that the tasks can either be once-off or moved into the other BAU actuarial teams.

An Actuarial Fellowship qualification
**Experience & Knowledge**:
Experience in an actuarial reporting, product development, risk and/or capital or modelling environment including IFRS, EV or Regulatory Reporting bases
Good knowledge of SLS’s products would be an advantage
Good knowledge of the actuarial control cycle and actuarial BAU processes would be an advantage
Computer and/or modelling skills will be a significant advantage.
