Mechanic Assistant

We operate on a 7-day basis, including public holidays. While time off is provided, apprentices will be required to work weekends and public holidays.

**Job Summary**: Assisting of the business mechanic in his duties which range from daily inspections of the fleet and attending to minor repairs and preventative maintenance, including greasing of vehicles, undercarriage inspections, structural and hydraulic maintenance, electrical inspection, and general upkeep of the fleet's presentation.

**Key Objectives**:

- Assist in the maintenance and repair of vehicles, particularly diesel engines, busses, taxis, trailers and tractors, in accordance with safety regulations and industry standards.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the workshop at all times.
- Support the lead mechanics in troubleshooting and diagnosing vehicle issues.
- Contribute to the team’s efforts in ensuring all vehicles are serviced in a timely and efficient manner.
- Commit to continuous learning and development in the field of mechanics.

**Responsibilities**:

- Mechanical Work on Vehicles:_
- Conduct daily inspections of the fleet.
- Check vehicle oil and water, ensuring there are no leaks.
- Check brakes, wipers, and other essential systems.
- Perform all-around spot checks on vehicles.
- Inspect wheel bearings and tire conditions.
- Attend to minor repairs after hours.
- Ensure vehicles are safe and roadworthy.
- Conduct routine fleet inspections.
- Perform roadworthy repairs and keep accurate records.
- Electrical Work:_
- Ensure all electrical components are in good working condition.
- Check trailer plugs for damage and ensure all lights are functioning correctly.
- Ensure wiring on trucks and trailers is in order.
- Conduct all-around spot checks on trailers.
- Inspect trailer tire conditions.
- Problem Solving:_
- Resolve wiring problems on trucks and trailers.
- Address issues to ensure trucks and trailers are roadworthy and safe.
- Report unsolvable problems to the Senior Transport Controller.
- Admin Skills:_
- Keep detailed records of all work done on vehicles.
- Maintain stock control and report malicious damages.
- List required materials for maintenance and order new stock as needed.
- Submit weekly stock sheets.
- Adhere to all reasonable instructions given by Transport Controllers.
- Tools, Spares, and Equipment:_
- Perform daily equipment checks and clean tools before the end of the shift.
- Ensure all tools and equipment are in working condition and securely stored.
- Report any damaged tools or equipment.

**Requirements**:

- Must reside in the Franschhoek/Paarl/Stellenbosch Area.
- Possession of a Code 10 valid driver's license.
- Grade 12.
- 3 years of experience in a related field.
- Basic understanding of vehicle care and maintenance.
- Mechanical certificate (advantageous).
- Electrical certificate (advantageous).
- Strong attention to detail and a safety-first mindset.
- Ability to follow instructions and work well within a team.
- Must be fluent in English and Afrikaans
