Lecturer: Soil Biology

Duties/Pligte
- Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the Department of Soil Science;
- Developing Soil Biology and Soil Health / Soil Quality modules in alignment with current modules;
- Creating an active and productive research programme in the fields of soil health, soil biology, regenerative agriculture, soil carbon cycles and publication of such research in relevant peer-reviewed journals;
- Developing national and international research and industry partnerships and networks;
- Sourcing and managing external research funds;
- Supervision of postgraduate students;
- Involvement with community interaction and farmer engagement projects;
- Participating in international scientific conferences;
- Involvement with administrative duties at departmental, Faculty and University level.
Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes
- PhD in Soil Biology, **_OR_** PhD in a biological science with strong evidence of working on soil-related projects;
- The ability to develop new course material, and teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses;
- The ability to supervise postgraduate students on at least master's level (as supervisor or co-supervisor);
- Willingness to obtain research funding and experience in project management of research projects (as primary-investigator or co-investigator);
- Keen interest to participate in transdisciplinary research;
- Recent peer-reviewed scientific publications with a focus on Soil Biology / Soil Health, or similar;
- Technical skills in soil biome genetics (DNA extraction, RNA expression, metabolomics, sequence analysis), soil biome metabolic analysis and a fundamental understanding of soil chemistry and soil physics principals;
- Competence in handling biologically hazardous agents to a minimum of Biosafety Level 2;
- A valid driver's licence.

- Relevant experience in industry-related, applied research and engagement;
- Relevant level of computer literacy;
- Field experience testing sustainable agriculture practices;
- Proficiency in statistics, e.g., multivariate statistics, species diversity indices, etc.;
- Language proficiency for a multilingual university;
- Proven leadership ability;
- Demonstrated commitment to transformation in higher education.
