**Health and Safety Officer - 6 Months Contract**

**Job Purpose**:
To ensure that all feasibility study activities related to the proposed 10,000-capacity beef cattle feedlot and high-throughput abattoir are carried out in full compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, and that potential construction and operational health risks are identified, assessed, and mitigated from the planning stage.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Develop a **Preliminary Health and Safety Risk Assessment** for the project, including both construction and operational phases of the feedlot and abattoir.
- Identify and evaluate potential risks associated with:

- Construction and design of livestock infrastructure.
- Operation of abattoir and agro-processing equipment.
- Waste handling and effluent treatment processes.
- Biohazards and zoonotic disease risks in animal environments.
- Ensure **compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (No. 85 of 1993)** and relevant SANS codes.
- Advise the team on safety design considerations and safe work environments for future use of facilities.
- Participate in **site inspections**, ensuring that field teams (e.g. engineers, environmental practitioners) operate in safe conditions during the feasibility phase.
- Recommend safety specifications for inclusion in tender documentation and contractor compliance requirements.
- Contribute to the **risk management and contingency plan** section of the feasibility report.
- Coordinate with Environmental Specialist, Veterinary Advisor, and Engineers to ensure biosecurity and occupational health measures are integrated into all plans.

**Minimum Qualifications and Experience**:

- National Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field.
- Minimum of **5 years’ experience** in **health and safety compliance** for construction, agro-processing, or agricultural infrastructure projects.
- **Registered with the SACPCMP as a CHSO (Construction Health and Safety Officer)** or equivalent statutory body.
- Strong working knowledge of **South African OHS legislation**, risk management frameworks, and safety best practices.

**Key Skills and Competencies**:

- Ability to conduct site-based safety assessments and develop hazard mitigation strategies.
- Strong interpersonal and coordination skills, particularly in multidisciplinary teams.
- Report writing and documentation skills for formal project submissions.
- Risk identification, control planning, and emergency response protocol development.

**Working Conditions**:

- Based in the Eastern Cape with regular travel to the Ngqushwa project site for field assessments.
- Involves both office-based planning work and on-site risk analysis and health & safety advisory during investigations.
