Job Title: Laboratory Technician

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

As a Laboratory Technician with SGS, you will perform routine analytical techniques related to established Laboratory procedures. You will work well in a team environment, following clear instructions and maintaining a high level of quality in your work.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Perform weighing, fluxing, fusion, cupelling, and dissolution of prills as per relevant Competence Modules.
  • Ensure punctuality and meet customer requirements for turnaround time commitments.
  • Report daily production figures to Team Leader/Supervisor and explain targets not met.
  • Assist in investigating irregularities and non-conformances in the Fire Assay process.
  • Follow Team Leaders/Supervisors' clear instructions and demonstrate flexibility in executing duties.
  • Maintain a basic understanding of the LIMS system and adhere to the Quality Management System (ISO17025 and SANAS).
  • Assist with job profiling, laboratory instrument maintenance, and overtime work as needed.
  • Assist in coordinating and supervising the production team, ensuring required stock levels and completing production reports.
  • Participate in monthly stock counts, assist in training new employees, and adhere to all quality requirements of the SGS management system.
  • Perform other reasonable tasks assigned by direct line manager.
  • Initiate improvement requests, report faulty equipment, and observe, log, and report anomalies during analysis activities.
  • Ensure proper procedures are followed and quality results are reported.
  • Assist with training of new employees and participate in Operational Integrity projects and campaigns.
  • Report Health, Safety, and Environmental hazards, incidents/accidents, and near misses to the Supervisor/SHE Representative/Location Manager.
  • Apply the Check status process and use the Stop Work Authority when risks are not clearly established.
  • Observe and report faulty equipment and deviations from processes, assist in investigations, and maintain good housekeeping practices.
  • Participate in HSE Procedures, Integrity, Safe Talks, and Toolbox talks, and assist with the monthly stock counts.
  • Perform other reasonable tasks assigned by direct line manager.

  • Matric

Requirements

Experience

  • Experience in Fire Assay laboratory will be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Quality Management system will be an advantage

Competencies

  • Ability to follow and understand instructions.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in the English language.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Quality Management system.
  • Matric literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team situation and achieve common departmental goals.
  • Ability to work 24/7 shift patterns and at multiple work stations as needed.
  • Ability to work systematically and maintain work and workflow traceability at all times.
