Job Title: Medical Scientist - Hematology

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Scientist - Hematology to join our team at the South African National Blood Service. As a key member of our laboratory staff, you will be responsible for performing routine testing functions in blood banks, including compatibility, post-natal and preliminary transfusion reaction investigations.

About the Role:

  • Perform manual and automated testing functions according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and within required timeframes.
  • Check blood and blood product stock levels, reporting expired units as necessary.
  • Ensure accurate and efficient completion of tasks.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports.

Key Performance Areas (KPAs):

KPA 1: Operational Objectives
  1. Perform all operational functions according to SOP and within required timeframes.
  2. Verify that all equipment is in working order and report defects to the supervisor.
  3. Monitor equipment temperatures and report any problems to the supervisor.
KPA 2: Instrument and Laboratory Maintenance
  1. Conduct daily cleaning of work areas, cold rooms, fridges, freezers, and all blood banking equipment according to SOP.
  2. Ensure accurate and efficient completion of tasks.
KPA 3: Quality and Risk Objectives
  1. Ensure adherence to policies, documentation, and SOPs.
  2. Comply with standards of practice, SHEQ requirements, and accreditation regulations.
  3. Contribute to continuous safety and quality improvement initiatives.
KPA 4: Customer Relations
  1. Document customer complaints, compliments, and queries.
  2. Maintain professional interactions with internal and external customers.

Requirements:

  • HPCSA Registered Biomedical Technician/Technologist (Blood Transfusion).
  • Experience and knowledge requirements as per HPCSA registration for Medical Technician/Technologist (Blood Transfusion).
  • Understanding of relevant legislation and company procedures.
  • Computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
