As a Legal Manager at FirstRand Short Term Insurance, you will provide leadership in a team of Legal Advisors, ensuring compliance with the highest standards of regulatory and business conduct and practices. You will understand and ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines, including those governing securities activities, company law, anti-money laundering, terrorist financing, and sanctions. You will take responsibility for understanding business risk and effectively identifying, escalating, mitigating, and resolving legal risk and compliance matters.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure tight legal controls and provide robust advice on transactions.
- Develop a culture of legal awareness in the business to avoid losses on avoidable legal matters.
- Reduce legal spend on external legal counsel through development of internal expertise.
- Contribute to the Bank's drive to manage risk proactively and tightly.
- Support regaining the trust of regulators and the wider business community through proactive regulatory engagement.
- Manage all legal issues in South Africa and ensure timely execution of transactions and cases.
- Support and facilitate internal product development through the products approval process.
- Provide sound, technical product, legal, and transactional advice to the business.
- Manage the process of engaging external counsel and negotiating fee structures.
- Lead in the proactive and strategic identification of legal risks at a country level.
- Prepare regular and accurate country legal risk reports.
- Communicate identified risks to stakeholders and influence stakeholders to improve legal risk controls and governance.
- Develop and maintain a legal training plan for the legal team and stakeholders.
- Ensure robust Legal support is provided in South Africa.
- Drive the development and maintenance of good relationships with internal and external business stakeholders.
- Provide timely legal advice, briefings, and recommendations on key legal issues.
- Raise awareness of legal risks and issues within the business through targeted training and knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to the risk governance of Team Legal by being the policy expert in country.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of legal risk management and compliance, as well as excellent leadership and communication skills. They will be able to work effectively in a team environment and provide sound advice to stakeholders.
