Blood Donation Specialist

The Blood Donation Specialist is responsible for managing the collection of quality safe blood and blood products according to specific targets set per blood drive (fixed or mobile).

This role requires a strong understanding of blood donation procedures, donor safety, and customer service skills to ensure a positive experience for donors.

• Manages cost per unit for whole blood and specialized collections within agreed targets by determining and loading consumables as needed.
• Maintains and validates equipment to ensure timely repairs and minimizes downtime.
• Reports increases/decreases in consumable usage and discrepancies in stock deliveries to the Clinic Supervisor.

1. Greeting donors, assisting with registration, and guiding them through the donation process.
2. Ensuring donors complete necessary forms and understand risks associated with blood donation.
3. Addressing and reporting complaints, and providing excellent customer service at all times.
4. Collecting whole blood and/or apheresis units to meet assigned targets, and assists with setting up and tearing down the blood drive.
5. Documenting results of basic physical checks on relevant record sheets and capturing information on donor questionnaires.
6. Conducting confidential risk behavior interviews with potential donors and educating them on high-risk behavior.
7. Caring for donors during and after donation, including providing refreshments and education.
8. Initiating treatment in emergencies with the help of the in-charge or SANBS Medical Lead Consultant pending arrival of emergency personnel.
9. Completing all post-donation documentation and reports as required.

• Diploma/Degree in General Nursing Sciences
• Code B or EB Manual driver's license
• 2 years Registered Professional Nursing experience
