The South African National Blood Service is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Blood Collection Specialist to join their team. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the collection of quality safe blood and blood products.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Manages cost per unit for both whole blood and specialized collections within agreed targets by determining, packing, and loading consumables for blood drives/donor centers as per the target.
  2. Maintains and validates equipment to ensure timely repairs.
  3. Reports increases/decreases in consumable usage to the Clinic Supervisor and discrepancies in stock deliveries.
Stakeholder Relations:
  • Welcome donors, assist with registration, and guide them through the process.
  • Address complaints and report any issues to the in-charge.
  • Ensure customer needs are understood at all times.
  • Cross-train staff on customer service principles.
Internal Processes:
  1. Collect whole blood and/or apheresis units to meet assigned targets.
  2. Assist with setting up blood drives, packing, and off-loading vehicles efficiently.
  3. Complete donor documentation and assessment procedures according to relevant SOPs.
  4. Recruit and book whole blood and specialized donors to ensure targets are met.
  5. Conduct basic physical checks on donors, capture information, and report deviations.
  6. Document results of physical checks on record sheets/Donor Questionnaires.
  7. Inform the clinic supervisor of irregularities and accept or defer donors based on medical reasons.
  8. Educate donors on high-risk behavior.
  9. Prepare blood packs to ensure correct volumes are collected.
  10. Care for donors during donation, provide refreshments, and education.
  11. Initiate treatment in emergencies (First Aid/CPR) until emergency personnel arrive.
  12. Complete post-donation documentation and reports.
  13. Provide post-donation care and advice.
Learning and Growth:
  • Perform Clinic Supervisor duties according to operational requirements.
  • Attend and participate in monthly staff meetings to discuss strategy, values, team building, policy changes, and SOPs.
  • Analyze training needs and manage staff competency through observation and CPD/PoE completion.
Governance:
  • Maintain and update staff and equipment files according to relevant policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the application of policies and procedures in the unit according to SHEQ and Operational policies.
  • Manage medical waste by discarding it according to SOP.
  • Maintain a safe environment by following safety procedures according to SOP.

This role requires a Diploma/Degree in General Nursing Sciences and a Code B or EB Manual driver's license. The ideal candidate will have 2 years of Registered Professional Nursing experience and knowledge of relevant legislation, company procedures, SANBS policies, and Standards of Practice for Blood Transfusion in SA.
