Job Description

Job Title: Director of Student Life and Governance

Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead and manage Student Life and Governance at the University of Johannesburg. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to enhance student learning and living experience.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and Implement Strategies: Develop, direct, and monitor the strategy and operational plan of student life and governance to ensure alignment with the University's strategic objectives.
  • Policy Development and Implementation: Ensure that all applicable student policies are up to date, identify needs for policy development, and review the functions of Student Life and Governance.
  • Leadership and Management: Conceptualize and implement strategic plans in conjunction with staff members, assist staff members in operational planning, and drive actions related to Student Life and Governance.
  • Communication and Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with relevant authorities on behalf of Student Life and Governance, communicate decisions of relevant committees and divisions to stakeholders, and execute tasks delegated by institutional committees.
  • Financial Management: Manage the allocated budget, ensure adherence and compliance with the allocated budget and applicable finance policies and procedures, and control financial expenditure throughout the year.
  • Student Experience: Promote the initiatives that enhance student wellbeing, enhance and maintain student wellness initiatives, promote transformative student culture, and promote campus student stability.
  • Student Governance: Facilitate annual elections of the Student Representative Council (SRC), House Committees, Student Parliament, Council of Students with Disabilities, student councils, and societies.
  • Risk Management: Identify areas of development for staff, facilitate the development of a capacity-building programme for staff, and manage all processes of consequence management.
Requirements:
  • Qualifications: A qualification in management studies would be an advantage.
  • Experience: Five (5) to eight (8) years of experience within the Student Affairs environment, five (5) to eight (8) years of experience in interacting with Student Leaders, and extensive and demonstrable relevant management experience.
  • Skills: Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, financial management skills, resource management skills, strong organisational and leadership skills, information and knowledge management skills, effective leadership and outstanding people management skills, risk assessment and management skills, ability to work well in a team environment and under pressure, planning and organising skills, creative and innovative skills, policy development and implementation, stakeholder engagement and management.
