Job Title: Junior Tax Specialist

Merand Corbett & Associates is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Junior Tax Specialist to join our team. As a Junior Tax Specialist, you will play a key role in ensuring the company's tax compliance and risk management.

Key Responsibilities:Tax Projects
  • Assist the Group Tax team in responding to tax queries from clients, operations, and stakeholders in a timely manner.
  • Review and scrutinize invoices from service providers, law firms, and audit firms to ensure accurate billing and compliance with agreed scope and budget.
Tax Accounting and Reporting
  • Assist in tax audits and collaborate with tax authorities and external advisors across various countries.
  • Participate in automation projects and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance tax compliance and efficiency.
  • Engage with local auditors and external service providers to ensure accurate tax accounting calculations and reporting.
  • Undertake CIT, WHT, VAT, and other tax reconciliations, advising on adjustments and financial impact.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards and tax regulations, providing insights into tax implications on financial statements.
  • Assist in reconciling tax balances on the general ledger.
Ensure Tax Compliance Across the Business
  • Prepare and coordinate the preparation of Income Tax returns, VAT returns, and other VAT-related reports across multiple jurisdictions in Africa, the UK, and Europe, ensuring accurate and timely filing.
  • Prepare and coordinate the preparation of Withholding Tax (WHT) declarations across Group operations, ensuring timely and accurate filing.
  • Assist in establishing new tax compliance processes and procedures.
  • Maintain a database of local and international tax laws and regulations.
  • Accurately prepare and file required tax returns in a timely manner.
  • Prepare all tax papers on a regular basis as needed.
  • Respond to all tax information data requests.
  • Consult with relevant internal departments to ensure accurate and timely filings.
  • Assist in preparing transfer pricing master and local files, maintaining TP documentation, and filing returns.
  • Obtain TCC for entities and monitor tax compliance status for Group entities.
Identify and Mitigate Tax Risk
  • Assist with tax due diligence and health checks.
  • Assist in analyzing reports of potential tax risk areas and mitigations in relation to existing or planned in-country operations and/or new product initiatives.
  • Assist in monitoring internal controls and processes to ensure accurate tax calculations, compliance, and reporting.
Tax Audits
  • Respond to information requests, consult with tax authorities, and provide necessary documentation and analysis to support clients' tax positions.
  • Ensure effective communication with internal and external stakeholders and resolution of audit matters.
Tax Knowledge Sharing
  • Maintain a tax knowledge database of returns filed, compliance calendar, and statutory records on a shared tax database.

Experience:

  • 3 years of experience in a tax role.
  • 1-3 years of experience in a multinational organization, accounting firm, or financial institution.
  • 3 years of experience in tax compliance and tax accounting.
  • Corporate Tax and VAT legislation, including VAT apportionment.
  • Knowledge of global tax regulations with a focus on Africa, accounting standards (IFRS), and compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of all types of tax returns.
  • Proficiency in tax software, financial systems, and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Knowledge of international tax and complex transfer pricing.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to analyze complex tax issues and provide practical solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities to support staff.
  • Ability to adapt to changing regulations and business environments while maintaining a proactive and solutions-oriented approach.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or Advanced Diploma in Accounting.
  • Registered professional tax technician/professional tax certification (essential).
  • VAT Certification (preferred).
