Job Title: Landfill Engineer

Stratogo is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Landfill Engineer to join our team. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of our Class A KwaDukuza Landfill site and other landfill sites we operate on.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage the acceptance, treatment, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.
  • Develop and implement waste disposal schemes, handle and dispose of waste, and collate statistics and compile reports.
  • Deal with enquiries and complaints from members of the public, investigate and follow up on claims of illegal dumping, and consult with residents, community groups, councillors, housing associations, and traders associations about waste management issues.
  • Provide engineering analyses and calculations, ensure the monthly survey of the site is conducted timeously, and organize designs and details to produce a completed set of drawings.
  • Investigate and procure data required to develop a design, utilize various engineering-related computer software, compile project specifications, complete construction cost estimates, and provide engineering support activities required during construction.
  • Manage landfill construction projects from overseeing the preparation of construction plans to final approval, including managing consultants, contractors, and budgets, preparation of bid documents, bid letting, contract administration, coordinating contractors, construction quality assurance firms, and materials order and delivery.
  • Actively manage and track capital budgets for engineering and construction projects and report to local management and corporate using Company procedures.
  • Coordinate landfill capacity tracking to help manage this key asset, including developing projections and working with senior management to develop efficient fill sequencing plans and schedules for cell construction and closure timing.
  • Provide continuous evaluation of sites for adherence to construction and permit documents and for site expansion potential through regular site visits, be proactive in pursuing and obtaining required or beneficial permits and/or permit modifications.
  • Collaborate with other professionals and subject matter experts to provide innovative, cost-effective engineering solutions to identified or potential operational, environmental, and compliance issues at landfills, transfer stations, hauling operations, and other businesses in your area and potentially across the Company.
  • Provide technical expertise and direction to management and other functional areas such as finance, legal, and safety to present a clear path to resolution.
  • Participate in review of acquisitions and coordination and evaluation of divestitures, including proforma modelling assistance and interaction with corporate and executive management during due diligence.
  • Assist in training and provide mentorship and supervision of technical staff assigned to your team.
  • Participate in regular budget review to ensure that budgets are achieved, ensure and develop optimization and efficiency programs for optimal equipment utilization, equipment maintenance, and labour and material costs.
  • Ensure that KPIs are developed and assessed on a regular basis.
  • Scheduling material and equipment purchases and deliveries.
  • Ensure projects run smoothly and structures are completed within budget and on time.
  • Provide advice and resolve any emerging problems/deficiencies.
  • Supervise/Manage contractor, subcontractor, and staff and mentor staff and liaise with a variety of stakeholders.
Quality Health & Safety:
  • Ensure health and safety legislation and contractual obligations pertaining to health & safety are adhered to.
  • Overall responsible for the Health & Safety of the landfill team, responsible for Health & Safety statistics, LTI, MTI, and ensures the team follows all legislation and rules pertaining to the site.
  • Responsible for creating and modelling a safe work environment; demonstrates safety practices. Promote pre-task planning for all projects.
  • Ensure that toolbox talks are maintained and risk assessments are regularly updated.
  • Conduct Root Cause investigations for all injuries and incidents that occur on site, ensuring discipline and preventative measures are adhered to.
Other:
  • Attend all training and safety inductions pertaining to this position.
  • Liaise with clients, suppliers, consultants, and contractors on technical aspects.
  • Interacts with partners and other companies in the group.
  • Produce presentations and/or represent the company at trade fairs and seminars.
  • Perform any other duties required by your designated Manager.
