POSITION: TECHNICAL OPERATIONS MANAGER

LOCATION: Gauteng

OBJECTIVE OF THE ROLE
The primary aim of this position is to supervise maintenance functions and ensure that all operational schedules are effectively established, and equipment is performing at peak efficiency. The role involves managing and enhancing the Utilities operations to provide exceptional service to production departments. Additionally, it is essential to implement systems and programs that uphold and maintain high standards of plant and equipment performance, availability, and reliability.

REPORTING TO: OPERATIONS MANAGER / GROUP ENGINEERING MANAGER

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist in executing capital and operational projects.

• Manage capex initiatives aimed at enhancing plant and equipment capabilities from inception to commissioning.

• Ensure all capex projects are completed within the stipulated time, budget, and specifications.

• Create comprehensive drawings and specifications for capital and operational projects within the relevant discipline.

• Implement systems and programs to achieve and maintain high standards of equipment availability and reliability at the facility, ensuring adherence to World Class Manufacturing principles.

• Collaborate with the maintenance planner to develop preventive maintenance programs and schedules for all equipment as per the adopted reliability strategy.

• Enhance machine availability by actively minimizing unplanned downtime through effective problem-solving methodologies (e.g., 5Why, End state, etc.).

• Develop standard operating procedures to train engineering staff and ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.

• Conduct supplier evaluations to ensure equipment operates within its designated parameters.

• Ensure compliance with all statutory inspections and requirements related to machinery as per the relevant health and safety regulations.

• Assist in preparing cost estimates for budget formulation, proposed projects, and other assigned tasks.

• Optimize the use of water, energy, and other resources to minimize operational costs.

• Develop engineering initiatives aimed at reducing product costs, enhancing product quality, and addressing safety concerns.

• Ensure that adequate tools and equipment are available for team members.

• Actively promote sustainable development initiatives within the facility.

• Optimize plant settings and operational parameters to achieve optimal quality, productivity, and service delivery outcomes.

• Meet all performance targets related to plant and equipment.

• Support the facility in implementing programs and systems to uphold high standards of Safety, Health, and Environment.

• Assist Group Engineering in coordinating all aspects of engineering activities, including financial forecasting, contract bidding development, and contractor payment approvals necessary for project completion.

ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES / KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

• Familiarity with corrugator and converting machinery.

• Strong negotiation skills.

• Proficient in planning, organizing, and management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

• National N Diploma (N5/T3) in mechanical or electrotechnical (heavy current) with a minimum of 2 years' experience with similar machinery.

• Trade Test as an Artisan – Mechanical/Electrical/Millwright with at least 5 years' experience with similar equipment.

• Engineering Diploma or degree in mechanical or electrical (heavy current) engineering.

• Government Certification of Competency is an added advantage.

• 3 to 5 years of post-qualification experience in a supervisory or management role.
