Job Title: Yard Controller

At Assign Services (Pty) Ltd - JHB, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Yard Controller to join our team. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient movement of goods and materials within our yard.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist trucks, including own and third-party vehicles, while reversing in the yard and between the mill and rigger, ensuring no vehicle is allowed to reverse without assistance.
  • Monitor loading and offloading of trucks, maintaining safe practices and keeping pedestrians clear of vehicles and machinery.
  • Control the flow of trucks, communicating with security to ensure smooth operations.
  • Ensure man and machine separation where possible, controlling vehicles and space allocated for them when parked overnight to avoid disrupting normal operations.
  • Manage the pallet area and pallet requirements for the rigger, ensuring efficient use of resources.
  • Manage the waste area, ensuring wastebins are emptied when needed and maintaining a clean and organized environment.
  • Implement the First-In-First-Out (FIFO) method when moving pulp from the rigger to the fitter for consumption, ensuring timely and efficient processing.
  • Conduct daily checks (twice a day) on stacked pulp in the yard area to ensure safety and prevent accidents.
  • Maintain optimal levels of customer service, resolving customer issues promptly and efficiently.
  • Supervise customer and company staff in all yard operations, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and procedures.
  • Monitor loading of materials to ensure safe transfer to other stores, coordinating with other departments to investigate accidents and identify root causes of damage.
  • Liaise with security to assist with CCTV investigations and compile evidence for accidents and incidents.
  • Ensure wadding is shipped from the factory to the rigger as soon as possible, with trucks loaded and offloaded efficiently.
  • Enforce safety rules among truck drivers and material handlers, familiarizing yourself with truck and forklift driver safety rules and assisting in their enforcement.
  • Ensure truck drivers adhere to standard operating procedures for shipping stock from the factory to the rigger, reporting any delays or issues promptly.
  • Verify that no damaged stock is received from the factory and report any issues immediately.
  • Familiarize yourself with the duties of the receiving supervisor and assist in their absence when required.
  • Manage the core area, controlling and managing cores received from suppliers and converting, as well as core stands needed to ship cores back from converting.
  • Manage the relationship with the bin supplier, performing quality checks on cores received back from converting and suppliers, including buy-ins from customers.
  • Manage core selection and issuing to the factory, utilizing reused cores first and marking them each time they are reused to track usage.
  • Communicate with relevant stakeholders and suppliers to ensure the availability of cores, preventing production disruptions.
  • Manage the procurement of cores, including buy-ins from customers, and monitor quality and quantity.
  • Track core usage from converting or buy-ins from customers versus new stock bought from suppliers, monitoring quantity and price daily and monthly.
