Job Overview

The University of Pretoria invites applications for the position of Registrar, a senior leadership role that requires a highly skilled and experienced professional. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and governing the institution, with a focus on strategic management, academic administration, legal services, and stakeholder relations.

About the Position

The Registrar will serve as a key member of the University's Executive Management team, reporting directly to the Vice-Chancellor and Principal. Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing strategic leadership and guidance on the implementation of the University's strategic plan;
  • Liaising with internal and external stakeholders to promote the University's interests and reputation;
  • Developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure effective governance and compliance;
  • Managing and supervising staff in the Department of Enrolment and Student Administration, Secretariat, and other areas as required;
  • Coordinating and participating in various committees and working groups to advance the University's interests and goals.
Responsibilities and Duties

The Registrar will be responsible for a range of duties, including:

  • Providing advice and support to the Vice-Chancellor and Principal on matters related to governance, strategy, and policy;
  • Representing the University at national and international forums and conferences;
  • Maintaining and developing relationships with key stakeholders, including government, industry, and academia;
  • Collaborating with colleagues to develop and implement initiatives that promote the University's values and mission;
  • Ensuring effective communication and information flow within the University community.
Qualifications and Experience

The University requires a strong candidate with:

  • An LLB or equivalent degree;
  • A Master's degree in a relevant field;
  • At least seven years' experience in a tertiary institution, with five years in a senior management or executive role in legal and governance affairs;
  • Proven legal skills and extensive experience in the South African higher education sector, complemented by knowledge of policy development, the Higher Education legislative and regulatory framework, and contemporary sectoral challenges;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, computer literacy, and ability to liaise with stakeholders.
