Program Overview: This program focuses on enhancing the livelihoods of vulnerable workers in the recycling sector while creating new quality opportunities for youth. We aim to increase access to better-quality and higher-paying jobs for marginalized groups by working with local businesses and organizations.

The program will focus on the townships of Soweto in the City of Johannesburg municipality and the City of Ekurhuleni, where we will work with local stakeholders to identify opportunities for growth and improvement.

Job Summary: As a Gender and Youth Specialist, you will play a critical role in advancing gender equality and youth empowerment within our program. Your expertise will help us design and implement effective strategies to address the needs of vulnerable populations and promote inclusive economic growth.

Your responsibilities will include providing technical support to program staff, building local capacity for gender integration, and facilitating gender-related training for staff. You will also contribute to the development of knowledge products and participate in regular meetings with the Global Gender Practice and program leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide technical oversight and technical assistance to a portfolio of activities across the program.
  2. Support short-term consultants during the inception phase analysis study which includes a socio-economic baseline, macro level baseline, youth and gender analysis.
  3. Assist the Senior Business Specialists and Implementation Manager in developing the detailed project work plan, including training material content.
  4. Identify, develop, and support deployment of gender-responsive activities to meet the needs of clients.
  5. Build local capacity for gender integration and facilitate gender-related training for staff.
  6. Support the development and adoption of gender analysis tools including gender action plans to assist with the design and implementation of activities and continuously improve technical excellence.
  7. Conduct assessments and facilitate meetings with key stakeholders and clients to identify measures to improve inclusiveness, especially for youth and women within the project scopes.
  8. Provide strategic guidance and counsel to program leadership and staff on gender integration approaches, priorities, and compatibility with program aims and resource constraints.
  9. Support monitoring of youth and gender integration in activities and inclusion in program reports.
  10. Contribute to reporting on youth and gender-related topics.
  11. Support the development of key knowledge products (e.g., case studies, lessons-learned documents) that facilitate program development, implementation, internal knowledge sharing, and the influencing agenda.
  12. Participate in regular meetings with the Global Gender Practice and the program leadership.
  13. Participate in the Gender Champions Network.

Qualifications and Core Competencies:

  1. A Bachelor's degree with 3 years of experience or a Master's degree in development economics, sociology, anthropology, gender, or another relevant discipline with at least 1-year experience.
  2. Demonstrable experience implementing practical approaches to advance youth and gender equality in programs.
  3. Experience in youth learning techniques and excellent in-person and virtual facilitation skills.
  4. Ability to work across teams to influence behavior and build capacity.
  5. Ability to communicate complex youth and gender issues with clarity and precision.
  6. Demonstrated success in leading tasks, activities, or initiatives requiring a combination of strong analytical, writing, social, and management skills.
  7. A deep commitment to gender equality and women's economic empowerment.
  8. Experience implementing approaches to mitigate and reduce gender-based violence in economic growth programs is a plus.
  9. High standards of personal integrity and a flexible personality with an excellent sense of humor are required.
  10. Fluency in English and at least one local language is necessary.
