Cost Accountant Job Description

The Talent Room is seeking a skilled Cost Accountant to join our team in Ottery, Cape Town. As a Cost Accountant, you will play a crucial role in supporting operations by providing financial information to aid decision-making and drive profitability, operational efficiency, and effective cost control.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Implement a costing system with value-adding reports and recommendations to drive business growth.
  • Review and closure of jobs, investigating variances and driving corrective actions to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
  • Review and update Bill of Materials (BOMs) as required to ensure inventory valuation is accurate.
  • Review and monitor labour and overhead allocations to products to optimize costs.
  • Review and monitor labour and overhead rates used for recovery to ensure compliance.
  • Analyse material usage and waste, and drive corrective actions to reduce costs.
  • Review inventory count results for approval to ensure accuracy.
  • Review the accuracy of inventory-related transactions and assist with queries to resolve issues.
  • Ensure strong inventory controls are in place to safeguard inventory and drive accuracy.
  • Perform product and customer costings to inform business decisions.
  • Compile costing information and perform ad-hoc costings as required to support business needs.
  • Analyse margin and costs, and identify areas for improvement to increase profitability.
  • Build and maintain reports to assist product mix decision-making.
  • Perform financial modelling to inform decision-making for strategic objectives.
  • Prepare information and reports for business presentations to communicate key findings.
  • Assist with compiling annual budgets and rolling forecasts to ensure financial planning.
  • Provide systems support to users and maintain master data to ensure data accuracy.
  • Identify and drive system improvements and assist with special projects to enhance business processes.
  • Prepare SOP documentation and provide training to staff on systems implemented to ensure knowledge transfer.

Requirements:

  • CIMA certification
  • At least 1-3 years of experience in a financial or cost accounting role
  • Experience working within a manufacturing environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability
  • Good attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Good written, verbal communication and collaborative skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment subject to constant change
  • Team Player and the ability to drive projects and implementations within a team
  • Proficiency in accounting software (Syspro)
  • Experience in implementing a costing system
