EDF Renewables is seeking a highly skilled Project Developer to join our team in South Africa. As a Project Developer, you will play a critical role in securing land rights, authorizations, permits, and licenses required to build and operate wind, solar PV, and/or BESS projects.
Key Responsibilities:- Identify and originate new renewable energy projects, including conducting desktop analysis, negotiating land lease agreements, and securing necessary permits and licenses.
- Manage commercial negotiations for agreements such as land lease agreements, servitudes, environmental impact assessments, and regulatory approvals.
- Apply for and secure necessary permits, licenses, and authorizations for renewable energy projects, interacting with government departments such as DFFE, DMRE, DAFF, DWS, CAA, SAWS, Eskom, SANRAL, DPW, DARDLR, and Local Municipalities.
- Manage internal costs and external consultant costs in accordance with development budgets.
- Manage external project stakeholders, including project opponents and Interested and Affected Parties, during the development phase.
- Implement strategies for risk mitigation to successfully secure permits and licenses from authorities.
- Contribute to the coordination of project due diligences, development plans, and timelines to bring projects to Financial Close efficiently and rapidly.
- Support the Company's participation in the Renewable Energy IPP Procurement Program and RFP's for private off-takers, focusing on land and environmental sections of bid submissions.
- Support the Project Director during financial close of a project and respond to queries raised by Lenders during their legal and technical due diligence process.
- Foster working relationships with external consultants, advisors, regulatory authorities, landowners, and joint venture partners, convening meetings when necessary.
- Stay up-to-date with Renewable Energy and wider power market developments, monitoring market activities and identifying potential opportunities and threats to the Company's strategy.
- Ensure the health and safety of employees, those under control, and those affected by work undertaken, including conducting risk assessments and communicating mitigation measures.
- Ensure employees understand health and safety risks involved in their work activities and apply necessary controls to manage those risks to acceptable levels.
The position reports directly into the Project Development Manager.
The position has functional reports, including a study engineer, grid engineer, and legal resource, during the development phase.
Qualifications and Certifications:- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as science, engineering, or commerce.
- At least 5 years of professional experience as a renewable energy Project Developer in South Africa.
- Project management
- Negotiation skills
- Contract management
- Knowledge of rural South African context, SA administrations, and environmental law
- Sound knowledge of MS 365 office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Teams
Excellent communication skills in both oral and written English; additional local language skills are an advantage. Willingness to travel and driver's license required.
