We are seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician Leader to join our team at the South African National Blood Service.

The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising and coordinating the activities of medical laboratory technicians and ensuring that all testing functions are performed according to Standard Operating Procedures and the Standards of Practice for Blood Transfusion in South Africa.

Key Performance Area (KPA) 1 Operational Objectives include:

  • Supervising and coordinating the activities of medical laboratory technicians.
  • Ensuring that all testing functions are performed according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and within the required timeframes.
  • Reporting situations where critical and non-critical consumables are not available after hours to the Blood Bank Supervisor.
  • Deputizing for Shift Supervisor/Blood Bank Supervisor when absent or unavailable.
  • Receiving reagents and proficiency tests and storing them in designated areas at the correct temperature.
  • Disposing of waste according to SOP.
  • Preparing documentation for waste traceability.
  • Collecting and placing medical waste containers in the designated area daily for removal and disposal by the approved waste removal company.
  • Checking weighing of waste by the waste disposal company.

KPA 2 Specialist Technical functions include:

  • Verifying test results performed by registered technicians, registered trainee technicians, and registered student technologists.
  • Assisting the Blood Bank Supervisor with training and competency assessments.
  • Performing secondary testing, including but not limited to, problem cross-matches, postnatal, antibody investigations, and preliminary transfusion reaction investigations within required timeframes and according to SOP specifications.

The ideal candidate will have a HPCSA Registered Biomedical Technician/Technologist (Blood Transfusion) qualification and relevant experience. Knowledge of relevant legislation, company procedures, and computer literacy in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook are also essential.
