Job Overview

The Production Operations Manager will be responsible for leading the engineering processes to ensure that our customer's needs are met while maintaining safety standards and achieving operational excellence targets.

Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Develop and execute a proactive maintenance and repair program, in conjunction with relevant Operations teams, to keep production equipment, systems, utilities, and facilities at a high level of serviceability. This program must:
    1. Improve availability and reliability of equipment.
    2. Minimize downtime.
    3. Reduce and stabilize overall cost of production.

The manager will lead and manage Engineering Projects:

  1. Plan and direct the installation, testing, operation, maintenance, and repair of facilities and equipment.
  2. Develop cost estimates for projects and maintenance work.
  3. Draw up project specifications.
  4. Check technical accuracy of completed work.
  5. Evaluate and maintain compliance with OEM standards on all machinery.
  6. Select outsourced services carefully to retain skills and competency in-house and to compress costs.
  7. Ensure detailed records are kept of all maintenance and repair work performed.
  8. Continuously monitor energy usage to ensure energy consumption targets are maintained.
  9. Accurately record utility meter readings.
  10. Identify and address excessive consumers of energy.
  11. Implement programs to continuously reduce energy load and consumption, addressing sustainability aspirations.
  12. Oversee the outsourced Security, Cleaning, and Gardening functions to ensure the Pietermaritzburg facility is kept clean, presentable, and secure at all times.
  13. Act as the primary point of contact for these outsourced functions on a day-to-day basis.
  14. Define the scope of work for security, cleaning, and gardening.
  15. Perform regular site inspections to ensure work is being performed to the required standard.
  16. Develop and update quarterly an Engineering Strategy outlining key focus areas of the function for the current financial year and longer-term considerations. Content and format should align with the agreed Operations Strategy Framework.
  17. Document all planned major maintenance and repairs interventions and projects by quarter and year, monitoring progress to this plan.
  18. Report against agreed KPIs, including financial metrics, reflecting the department's performance and expenditure.
  19. Develop clear short- and long-term action plans to address variances and achieve strategic business goals using leading indicators and short interval control, monitoring, and re-correct techniques.
  20. Ensure team members follow the most up-to-date SOPs and transactional documentation to ensure consistency of process.
  21. Develop and implement continuous improvement processes to improve output, reduce variability, and manage operational constraints.
  22. Develop and update the financial budget for the function annually and quarterly.
  23. Authorize expenditures and ensure adherence to Procurement policies.
  24. Seek financial optimization opportunities and demonstrate an entrepreneurial outlook.
  25. Analyze monthly financial performance, implementing corrective actions and commentary to support over- and under-spend.
  26. Direct activities ensuring compliance with applicable safety, health, and environment legislation and audit requirements.
  27. Maintain General Machinery Regulations (GMR) and adhere to them.
  28. Establish waste management and recycling programs for the engineering workshop and stores.
  29. Promote good housekeeping practices.
  30. Proactively manage performance and team dynamics to maintain a fair, professional, and high-performance environment aligned with company values.
  31. Develop individual and organizational capabilities to build bench strength while delivering results now and in the future.
  32. Select, train, coach, develop, motivate, and measure the work performance of individuals within the department to encourage accountability and promote employee engagement.
  33. Manage employees in a manner that maintains a healthy Industrial Relations climate.Desired Experience & Qualification
    1. A minimum Grade 12/Matric pass mark for mathematics/literacy and English.
    2. Proficiency in MS Office applications.
    3. A valid driver's license is essential.
    4. A Bachelor's/Honors Degree with a Govt certification/ticket in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is essential.
    5. A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in engineering management.
    6. Knowledge of system and application e.g., CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
    7. A minimum of 8 years in an engineering management role.
    8. Previous experience managing a large team.
    9. Strong analytical thinking/data interrogation skills with the ability to interpret and apply production-based data-driven decisions, measuring and analyzing trends.
    10. Experience working in a production/manufacturing environment.
    11. A reliable means of transport is necessary.
    12. Flexibility to work after hours is required.
    13. Residency within proximity of the factory in Pietermaritzburg is preferred.
