Historical Miller

Babylonstoren is seeking a passionate individual to join their team as a Historical Miller, responsible for delivering engaging demonstrations of grain milling and basic distillation tasks to the public and school groups at Soetmelksvlei, a living history museum.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in grain milling and/or distillation, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills. They will be able to work in a fast-paced, guest-facing environment, according to hospitality hours, in historical costume.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Perform daily demonstrations of grain milling and basic distillation tasks and activities to the public and school groups.
2. Prepare the milling and distilling areas for daily demonstrations, production, and de-briefing after daily activities.
3. Engage with visitors by explaining the work being carried out, as well as the historical context, and answer any questions that they might have.
4. Package flour and liquor made in demonstration areas for sale in the Soetmelksvlei shop and maintain adequate stock levels.

Requirements:

1. Formal or informal training in grain milling and/or distillation is preferred.
2. Matric or a relevant higher qualification would be advantageous.
3. Experience with working in a small team.
4. Fluent in both written and spoken Afrikaans and English.
5. Exceptional people skills – both public-facing in a hospitality context and working within a small team internally.
6. Reliable and well-organised.
7. Able to work in a fast-paced, guest-facing environment, according to hospitality hours, in historical costume.
8. Creative mindset.
