Job Description:
At Datacentrix, we are seeking an experienced and certified Senior SQL DBA to join our team based at our Midrand office. The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing day-to-day database administration and support in a large corporation with multiple database environments.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain and configure databases, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
  • Resolve database access and performance issues promptly, implementing effective solutions.
  • Develop and implement redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving.
  • Monitor and optimize physical data storage for database systems.
  • Plan and coordinate data migrations between systems, ensuring seamless transitions.
  • Perform database transaction and security audits, establishing appropriate end-user database access control levels.
  • Develop routines for end-users to facilitate best practices database use.
  • Provide expert solutions to complex IT-related challenges within the organization.

Enterprise Tasks:
  • Benchmark and analyze new technologies, recommending suitable implementations.
  • Evaluate and implement SQL flavour upgrades and downgrades, from Enterprise to Express.
  • Migrate data and/or servers, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
  • Assess high availability and recommend best-fit applications (AOHA and Failover).
  • Implement disaster recovery assessments and best-fit applications (AOHA, log shipping, mirroring, and replication).
  • Patch and roll out SQL installations, planning for future updates.
  • Facilitate enterprise integrations with SXi and other vendors.
  • Evaluate new software releases and products, ensuring alignment with business needs.

Data Maintenance:
  • Configure SQL servers for data warehousing and capacity planning.
  • Develop backup and recovery strategies, prioritizing data integrity.
  • Determine database hardware requirements, ensuring adequate capacity planning.

Reporting and Continuous Improvement:
  • Establish change control and testing processes for database modifications.
  • Create required reports in response to business user needs, optimizing information delivery.
  • Conduct research and make recommendations on database products, services, protocols, and standards.
  • Stay current with trends in the information technology industry, applying insights to improve operations.
  • Audit IT systems regularly, identifying areas for improvement and fortifying weaknesses.

Administration and Knowledge:
  • Conduct regular high availability health checks and failover tests.
  • Perform DMV maintenance, updating outdated indexes and tuning existing ones.
  • Monitor SQL performance, addressing lock, buffer, and general manager issues.
  • Troubleshoot integration package execution failures and SSAS package job failures.
  • Review error messages on replication errors and spot-check instances.
  • Maintain QA and DEV databases up-to-date with PROD for testing purposes.
  • Deploy new or existing code and patches for SQL, ensuring smooth running software.
  • Manage storage by shrinking unnecessary logs and files.
  • Verify SQL backups to disk, ensuring data integrity.
  • Design, architect, and build SQL solutions based on business requirements.
  • Write and troubleshoot complex stored procedures used to manage SQL environments.

Human Resources:
  • Manage and mentor a small team of DBAs, guiding their professional development.
  • Collaborate closely with programming staff on database design changes to meet business demands.
  • Delegate tasks and duties within the team, ensuring effective workflow.
  • Review completed tasks to ensure compliance with established standards.

Estimated Salary: R750,000 - R1,200,000 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.
Location: Midrand office.
