Job Title: Legal Advisor: Compliance

Nelson Mandela University is seeking a highly skilled Legal Advisor: Compliance to join our team. As a key member of our legal department, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that the university operates within legal guidelines and minimizes risks associated with legal matters.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Provide legal guidance and support on regulatory compliance matters to the university.
  2. Monitor and ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
  3. Review, draft, and negotiate contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
  4. Conduct legal research and stay updated on changes in laws and regulations affecting the university.
  5. Develop and implement compliance policies and procedures.
  6. Provide legal insights and recommendations to support business decisions.
  7. Collaborate cross-functionally with various departments to ensure legal compliance across the university.
  8. Ensure all legal documents are accurate, compliant, and reflective of the university's interests.
  9. Ensure relevant and accurate legal advice is provided to internal clients.
  10. Deal with matters involving multiple stakeholders.
  11. Assist in managing legal disputes and litigation, including working with external attorneys and counsel when necessary.
  12. Document and maintain legal files and matters/issues.
  13. Attend to PAIA requests.
  14. Educate and train employees on legal issues and compliance matters.
  15. Identify potential legal risks and develop mitigation strategies.
Requirements:
  1. Bachelor of Laws (LLB)
  2. Minimum 5 years of experience in a similar role
  3. Admitted attorney of the High Court (required)
  4. Knowledge of IP management, commercial law, litigation, public law, etc.
  5. Strong ability in conducting legal research and analysis
  6. Ability to prioritize and work meticulously
  7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  9. Strong organizational skills
  10. Upholding the university's values and ethics
