Applications are invited for the above-indicated vacancy within Newzroom Afrika. The incumbent will report to the input editor.
Purpose

The assignments editor is a key member of the input desk, which is responsible for ensuring that the news gathering process is conducted in a timely, accurate and engaging manner. Under the leadership of the head of input editor you will shape and create news coverage that sets Newzroom Afrika apart from other broadcasters in South Africa and beyond. You will also be a key interface between citizen journalists, some of whom may become regular contributors to the channel.
Key responsibilities
Lead reporters diary meetings daily/weekly/monthly
Liaise with field reporters daily on stories and investigations for news diary
Liaise with citizen journalists and lead the footage verification process from external sources
Be aware of legal issues relating to sensitive news stories and have a firm understanding to BCCSA code of conduct and the Press Code
Ensure Newzroom Afrika’s editorial guidelines and values are adhered to
Work with output team to ensure live crossings, story deadlines and other key information is effectively communicated to all team members
Ensure that forward planning is done timeously and maintain an events calendar
Ensure diary contains balance of events and unique stories to set Newzroom Afrika apart from competitors
Play a mentorship role to junior team members
Ensure deployment for breaking news stories is done efficiently
Coordinate stories coming from bureaus and freelancers
Manage, grow and mentor the team of field reporters
Build strong working relationships with the team of reporters
Assist reporters with building their diaries
Skills and competencies
10 years’ experience in journalism
Previous management experience on assignments or news desk
Strong sense of ethics and understanding of editorial independence
Knowledge of newsroom production systems and workflows
Good grasp of English and other official South African languages
Must be prepared to work shift hours, including early morning and late evening
Team player with a passion for news and current affairs
Strong contacts base in various sectors
