Purpose of the role

To lead the online news team and ensure accuracy and high standards of online delivery. Develop strategies that will appeal and increase audiences.
Key outputs

Lead the EWN online news team, across Johannesburg and Cape Town
Manage the team’s performance and KPIs - including accuracy.
Grow EWN’s reach across several audience groupings in the digital space (unique browsers, app subscribers, newsletter subscribers.)
Deep understanding of SEO practices and tools - including producing reports on SEO figures
Contribute towards the development of EWN’s online strategy.
Oversee the daily and weekly digital assignment diaries for the team.
Lead the online team to produce original content and ensure that the highest editorial standards are upheld.
Maintain and update writing, social media and product style guides.
Manage video, text and photo wire services.
Manage writing and online editing freelancers.
Keep abreast of the latest technological advances with respect to gathering, delivery of news across all platforms

**Requirements**:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or an equivalent qualification
At least five years’ experience in an editorial leadership position.
Strong editorial experience, demonstrable experience and knowledge current affairs
Strong understanding of the SA Press Code
Demonstrable management experience and skills
Demonstrable experience in a digital news environment
Demonstrable experience driving digital innovation across multiple media types.
Demonstrable experience in the creation of on-demand content types.
Strong knowledge and understanding of digital platforms and ecosystems,
Experience of video in the news digital space
Excellent understanding of socio-economic and political issues affecting South Africa, Africa & the world
Demonstrable performance management and mentorship skills
Strong leadership and motivational skills
Proven track record managing a multi-disciplinary newsroom.
The ability to gather data and interpret analytics.
Strong understanding of radio
Problem-solving skills
Ability to manage budgets.
Communication skills
Project management skills
