Laboratory Technician

**Main purpose of the job**:

- To prepare samples, conduct testing, and document results of environmental/wastewater samples for SARS-coV-2 and other communicable diseases under the supervision of laboratory scientists

**Location**:

- **NICD Sandringham - Johannesburg**

**Key performance areas**:

- Collect sewage samples using correct protocols from field sites as directed by senior staff
- Receive and prepare human and environmental sewage samples prior to analysis to ensure suitability for specific tests to be carried out
- Carry out routine testing procedures under the general supervision of senior qualified staff on human and sewage samples in order to obtain accurate results and troubleshoot where necessary
- Assist with maintenance of Excel and Access databases of test results and patient information
- Input data and results into databases and the LIMS system for subsequent review and authorization
- Maintain quality assurance processes as per accreditation requirements
- Observe health and safety regulations whilst working to always ensure the safety of others and oneself

**Required minimum education and training**:

- **Grade 12**

**Required minimum work experience**:

- **Minimum of 1-year working experience**

**Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities**:

- HPCSA registration would be advantageous
- 1-year post-registration as a Medical Technician in a medical laboratory
- Computer literacy with experience in using MS Excel and Outlook
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations, quality control, and assurance procedures
- Troubleshooting skills in laboratory processes
- Interpersonal skills and teamwork
- Methodical and meticulous record-keeping and filing
